OK, I hate to admit it, but I need an answer key for grammar . In the Queen Language Lessons, I can't even pick out the subject. An example, the sentence is: Our new home has three bedrooms. Is the subject home or bedrooms? The next lesson teaches predicates, so I am assuming the subject would be home and the predicate would be has three bedrooms. But, if that is right, how do I teach my child how to identify the subject without first discussing the predicate?

Another one was something like: Many people like to eat chocolate. So, initially, how do you know if the subject is people or chocolate? If it is people, then the predicate would be like to eat chocolate, is that correct?

And this one: Red is my favorite color. Is the subject Red or color?

How do I know if I am correct without an answer key?

Is there an online help that lets you fill in a sentence and then diagrams it for you?

Please excuse my ignorance and thank you for any help....

Our new home has three bedrooms.

What has 3 bedrooms? Answer: home - subject

Who likes to each chocolate? Answer: people - subject

Red is my favorite color.

What is my favorite color? Answer: Red - subject

I can't believe it doesn't TEACH how to identify the subject and have an answer key. How is the world is the teacher supposed to learn? :D

I suggest Junior Analytical Grammar. Although there are no videos like MUS, it is similar in that you teach your child the lesson (with a bit of advanced preparation) on Monday and they work on that lesson fairly independently for the remainder of the week.

Hi, Terry!
I am running into the same issue with the Queen books. I LOVE this series! But, just lately, there have been several times that I wished there was an answer key.

My plan is to go back to a more formal approach to grammar when my son turns ten. I'm going to have him continue in these books though because I really do like them.

Just wanted to let you know you aren't the only one! I had trouble with a simple punctuation exercise!

I'm just curious if anyone else thinks that the sentence
Red is my favorite color

is using transposed order therefore the subject is not red, but Color???

I know my oldest didn't learn about transposed order until 5th or 6th grade books.
The subject of a sentence is who or what the sentence is about. why am I singing School House Rock, Mr. Morton is the subject of the sentence and what the predicate says he does.

Hi Terri,

You might find some help online with the Purdue University Online Writing Lab
OWL link (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/grammar/)

Might be worth it for teacher/mom to play around with it??

This sentence is broken down this way:

Red-subject
is - linking verb
my favorite color - predicate nominative

Look at the linking verb as an equal sign. The term "nominative" sounds like "name," right? A predicate nominative "renames" the subject. Don't worry about transposing. If you flipped the sentence, then it would be broken down like this:

My favorite color- subject
is-linking verb
red - pred. nominative

Don't overthink it. :tongue_smilie:
