We found a great thread today that listed a site for making giant maps--so we printed out a map of Africa that's about 6.5 ft across! Just for fun, we are going to study Africa for a while. Dd will get a unit on Ancient Mali later--we already did Mansa Musa when we homeschooled last year, but I thought studying places and people in Africa would give us some fun stuff to do on Saturdays. Any good websites with activities? We already have Enchanted Learning.

Have you all played mancala? It is an ancient African game that is still popular today. You can purchase it at Target, Borders Books and Music etc.

That's funny--we just made our own mancala game with an egg carton yesterday!
Just cut off the lid, turn it upside down, and glue the egg holder part on top of it. Paint with "African" colors (we just chose blue and red, but red and yellow looks nice, and green, too). Use beans, beads, small stones, marbles for pieces. Directions for the game found online.

Also you might enjoy "Africa Counts: Number and Pattern in African Cultures (http://www.amazon.com/Africa-Counts-Pattern-African-Cultures/dp/1556523505/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225044490&sr=8-3)" by Claudia Zaslavsky, or "Math Games & Activities from Around the World (http://www.amazon.com/Math-Games-Activities-Around-World/dp/1556522878/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1225044490&sr=8-1)," also by her.
The Congo Cookbook (http://www.congocookbook.com/) is fun, and "Cooking the East African Way" and "Cooking the African Way" (children's cookbooks) aren't bad -- most libraries have them.
