Hi Everyone,

My dd is in 8th grade this year. Up till this point we have been using Wordly Wise for vocabulary. My dd HATES it!:glare:
I think she is learning but she really hasn't pushed back on any other subject but WW. ( at least not on a daily basis!)

I am looking for any other suggestions. If there is a good program that prepares them well for the SAT that would be great!

Thanks for all your Help.

Have you looked at Jensen's Vocabulary?

We are using that this year after using WW for years.

We also used Vocab for the High School Student and Vocab for the College Bound Student by Amsco. I got mine from Hewitt Homeschooling. We've done the VFHSS in 9th grade and VFCBS in 10th, but I think next go round we'll do them in 8th and 9th.

HTH!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will look into all of them. Do any of these programs offer tests like wordly wise?
I really have liked having the tests to evaluate her retention.

I have to say that is a draw back to Jensen's. I am making up the tests.
:001_huh:

But it must be really good if I am going to all this trouble!

WW was okay, but I thought it could cover more words that it did in a year.

We have the 7th and 9th grader in Vocabulary from Classical Roots Level A program. I have them look up and learn the meaning to all unfamiliar "challenge" words that are listed in the margins. They have learned a LOT from this program and I'll be continuing with it. This was a good placement, with the addition of the challenge words, for my well-read kids.

We also have them in the Vocabulary for Enjoyment (levels A and C) that you can get from Hewitt. Both cover words nicely and have a variety of activities. BUT, both of my kids have found that the grade-appropriate book has few words that they don't know. Maybe 1 out of 10 words is unfamiliar. So, we are only doing every other activity section and planning on covering two books per year. Definitely consider choosing a higher grade book.

My kids read a lot and always do 99th percentile in vocabulary on our yearly tests, so I should have known better than to pick grade-appropriate vocabulary books. Oh, well! (My kids are NOT in the 99th percentile in most subject, btw, just vocabulary!!!!)

Overall, the kids do the programs, don't complain about it, have learned some (but not as much as if I had put them into higher level books) from VOC and a lot from VCR.

Both have been better choices for us than WW.

I saw a few mentioned, but didin't see Sadlier-Oxford's vocabulary workshop.
Kolbe homeschool uses this.
I think there is a significant online component for "Vocabulary Workshop" too

WW was okay, but I thought it could cover more words that it did in a year.

An easy remedy could be to just do a list a week.
Are there 24 lists per week?

Just get the next book and start it for weeks #25-36.
That's roughly 3 books in 2 years with no real rushing

What do you do to "make up" tests for vocabulary?
I have always just listed the words (all of them) for a test.
Student has to write definition and sentence from scratch.

I don't do matching for fill-in tests for vocab.

And I do wraparound testing. After about 10 tests, I re-give Test 1, and then two tests weekly from then out.

I didn't want to have the student finish the vocab book and "not remember any" their words.
