First, are the flashcards considered essential?
Also, I'm considering the instructional dvds. Would I need the audio cd in addition?

No. In my opinion, the DVDs and Student book is all that is needed if you decide to go the DVD route. We enjoy it. We have the flashcards but I have dd make flashcards for her vocabulary- one for the Latin word and the English translation so she can match them up. I have the whole she-bang and I've only used the CD once, to quickly review the vocab, I know that it could be more useful if you car-school at all.

I think you can live without the DVD for Prima and just get the audio CD. I like to review the audio CD on a daily basis to keep the vocabulary fresh. The lesson on the audio CD is generally around two minutes so it doesn’t add a lot of time to our Latin studies. The concepts are introduced very gently in Prima and I didn’t find the DVDs to be necessary. I am, however, glad I have the DVDs for LC I.
As for the flashcards, we made our own for Prima.

We watch the DVD the first day & then use the audio cd the other days of school. My kids make there own flashcards (though we did buy them for LC II this year). The children love watching the DVD & it frees up my time to work w/ another student but I also like them to listen to the audio cd so we can make sure we are pronouncing it correctly. (Or at least pronouncing it with the right southern accent! LOL)

Like Jessica, I just used the Prima Latina DVD and student workbook. I had no Latin experience at that point, so I valued the DVD because it showed me how to set up a Latin lesson. It also helped me with pronounciation. I continued to use the DVD through LCI because it gave me a break from teaching during the day. For me, that was well worth the money I paid for the DVD. I had good intentions to use the audio CD daily as a review, but that never happened.

I make our flashcards - much cheaper and I get an extra review (trying to keep up w/ dc!). I usually just leave them on the dining room table and quiz them when we happen to be in there.
If you use the dvd, the cd probably isn't going to be anything additional. We did buy the cd and I like that I can play individual chapters or prayers in the car. We did not go with the dvd, mostly for $$ reasons but also because it's not that hard to teach it myself, even with no Latin background.

Hi,
We're doing Latina Christiana 1 now, and with just using the CD, books and some charades for vocabulary, we learnt Prima Latina really well and Latina Christiana 1 has been smooth sailing so far.

We are using the DVD's and even my 3yo is now saying "Salve" to everyone :) The DVD's are a nice break for us as they are the only DVD school that we are doing this year. HTH

Hi There,
I would agree with saying that you don't need the dvd's for PL. We just worked through the book and it's pretty self explanatory. We listened to the cd a few times a week and I made up flashcards (most of the time). I also agree that having the dvd's for LC1 is really nice. I have no previous latin and each time I watch it, I think of how much time it would have taken me to go over the material enough to teach it. So, I 'm really thankful that I bought the dvd's.

Tom uses the dvd's and the student book. We have the cd but haven't used it in awhile. He makes his own vocabulary cards.
