View Full Version : What else besides Bob Books?
Dd isn't enjoying her phonics lessons anymore, so we've taken to just reading Bob Books. We also have some readers by Nora Gaydos in a series called Now I'm Reading. What else is there at this level? I like the boxed sets, as it saves some $$.
Thanks.

Your library most likely has it. If your child can read CvC words, he/she will enjoy this book.
I also bought a used copy of Abeka's Handbook for Reading and a few first readers from Abeka. Sorry I don't remember the titles. Check out ebay. These were VERY GOOD and inexpensive.
We did ETC, some Phonic Pathways, sight word cards and letter tiles.

Sonlight sells Fun Tales which are similar to BOB books.
The simpler Dr.Seuss books, like The Foot Book.
The My First I Can Read Books- my dd particularly liked the Biscuit stories.

The Frog and Toad series, Step into Reading and Nora Gaydos has more in her series as well. There are always the Christian Light Nature Readers and McGuffey readers.

My dd really liked Sonlight's Fun Tales (boxed Set of early phonics readers). But also have you been to www.starfall.com (http://www.starfall.com)? Interactive readers and phonics games right online.

I've been making books for DS on the computer using clip art and words that I know he can figure out (we're just doing short vowels and consonants). One sentence per page (big font) with a picture or two. I've been doing 8-10 pages long, but will start longer ones soon. I usually bring one along for a car ride and "help" him read while I drive. He loves them!

I've just ordered a whole pack of Jolly Readers by Jolly Phonics from Book Depository. Their leveled sets include 18 readers for a pretty reasonable price. Amazon sell them too.
I love Jolly Phonics resources!
My ds is also disliking phonics, I'm not sure if I'm going to have him continue or not. I think we will finish up with our BOB books and go onto the set of McGuffy readers I have.

Do you mean specifically CVC words? If so here are some good ones (these also have some consonant blends and, of course, there will be some sight words you might have to help her with). You might check your library for these instead of purchasing them.

I See Sam books are perfect for what you're trying to do. They are far better than Bob books.

We are using both of the following that were recommended by an SWR trainer... and we love them! I've never used the Bob Books, but I do remember the trainer stating that she did not recommend them.
