View Full Version : Is it possible that ALL my dc would be diagnosed ADD?!?!?

I was at the park yesterday with cathmom, and she had gotten the "Right-Brained Kids in a Left-Brained World" book. I read the intro where there are several different descriptions of different manifestations of ADD and I found ALL of my dc except my 4yo. My 1st and 3rd boys (15 and 7) are of the "typical" ADHD-type - wide open, can't not move or make noises, spacy, forgetful, etc.
My 10yo has dyslexic tendencies, struggle with all school skill subjects, but is BRILLIANT mechanically (and has been obviously so since about 3.)
My 6yo is the lost kindergartener who has no interest or aptitude for anything approaching academics. I can't remember what else, but he fit the description to a T.
Is there something wrong with ALL of my boys, or is it ME? My 4yo girl is academically oriented, but my 2yo is more like her brothers.
What am I in for?

Sounds liindo of like my family. The oldest had a formal dx of ADHD and bipolar. The others probably have ADHD as well, and sometimes I wonder about the youngest having bipolar.
They say all this stuff runs in families big time, so it isn't something that is our "fault" due to parenting or whatever. I have to remind myself daily lately!

I have seen a lot of discussion and studies done on ADD, bipolar, depression, autism, learning disabilities, many more -- yes, they all have something in common. Studies are showing that all of these are related to gut health (gut flora) which comes from the father and mother and can be passed through generations, usually worsening as it goes. We have lots of these kinds of thing on both sides of my family. I've been reading up on it. There are diets to cure these difficulties, but I am using traditional medicine at the time because the diets are so difficult.
I have also seen mention of balancing the body's electrolytes and minerals to correct or help ADD, ADHD, and many other problems.
A couple places to look:

www.chembalance.com
Oh! The other thing may just be some sensory or brain integration issues. See www.littlegiantsteps.com.
Hope this makes sense. I'm getting very sleepy.

You should probably talk to my dad. He could tell you what to do!
Seriously, I don't know. I was reading some of the descriptions in that book and some of it sounded like my oldest, whom no one has ever even suggested had ADD or any learning issue! Probably it increases sales of the book if every parent can find a description of their child in there.

:lol::lol: He doesn't have ADD - not possible!
I hope it *is* all a marketing ploy. I would never have characterized J or L as ADD - that's why it hit me that way.

I have read more of the book now, and boy is it an annoying book!!! The author is so biased against left-brained people it's ridiculous. He implies that left-brained people were responsible for the Holocaust and WW2! He seems to be suggesting the same thing my dad was saying - that training in phonics is not necessary/helpful.
According to his questionnaire, dh and I are both whole-brained, but I lean left and he leans right.
