Please forgive me for my ignorance but I need to give my math-loving son a challenge. I have reviewed samples and I have checked out the placement tests but where do you go from there? I have looked at the Singapore site and Sonlight site but I'm confused as to what goes with what. If he needs 3B, what else do I need? I've read that one book is supplemental and then there's a textbook, workbook, teacher's book thingy. Can someone help me? I thought about supplementing his current math but I think I may change it altogether to Singapore.
Thanks:)

You would normally use the placement test to get a level. Then the basic set of books is the text book and workbook. I don't use the teacher's book. There are also supplementary texts, but I'd start with the basics and see how it goes.

If you're getting the US Edition, I'd get the text, workbook, and HIG (especially if you are just starting out w/Singapore). The CWP is excellent too. I'm not familiar w/the new Standards Edition.

I would recommend to test him first on the Sonlight Curriculum site. Then, find out where to go from there. If you want to use it as a supplement and he tests in 3B, do Challenging Word Problems 2. If he tests in 3B and you want to use it as a main curriculum, then the essential books are the textbook, workbook, and teacher's guide. It is a very good math program, but it is difficult in the higher levels.
Hope that helps!
Blessings to you and your family!
Sincerely,
Karen

Thanks, everyone!
I forgot to mention that my son tested and 3B is his perfect fit. I revisited the site and I read that I needed to use the 3B/4A text, workbook and home guide and that I should use the US edition. I peeked through the home guides also since I had viewed the textbooks prior. My son loves it! He wanted to answer every problem in the samples. He loves math and science. What am I going to do with this child! LOL!

I signed up just to see the answer to this question. I would like to learn more about Singapore as well.

I did have one more question! I have looked at the pages and wondered how often do you do Singapore during the week?

Hopefully I'm not hijacking this thread by asking this question. If you had to chose between the challenging word problems or intensive practice, which would it be and why?

Hi Kysha! Dd and I do Singapore four days a week. I set the timer for 40 minutes and whatever she gets done, she gets done. I have the HIG, and there is a schedule in the front of that you could go by, but we tend to get more done than what is suggested in our 40 minute period. HTH!:)

I look through the books for one year (for you it would be 3B and 4A) and count how many exercises there are to complete. Then I work out how many I need to do per week through the year, and make sure we average at least that many.

Challenging Word Problems contains only word problems, whereas Intensive Practice is more varied. It just depends what kind of supplementary practice you want.
