View Full Version : Saxon Algebra 2 (3rd ed) test problem question

I am trying to find the answer to a test problem. Test #5 problem 17


(-3a0)2 a3ac 2c 0c

(I could not get the exponents to show. They are in bold)

The problem is based on Lesson 2.

The answer in the answer key is -243ac4 (the last 4 is an exponent)

My dd put the correct answer but as a positive. We looked in the text, (we also use DIVE), tried to contact Saxon to no avail. She can't figure out why the answer is negative. Unfortunately, I can't seem to help her.

She answered all of the other problems on the test correctly, so this is a 95 vs 100 grade. I also don't want her to continue to make the same mistake again.

Any help from current users of Saxon Algebra 2 or Math whizzes
would be greatly appreciated.:001_smile:

hint: (use the ^ before the exponent)

When she took the (-3)^-3 to the 'top' the (-3) should remain negative and the exponent becomes positive.

A negative 3 to the third power is a NEGATIVE 27. (-3)(-3)(-3)= -27

The (-3a^2)^2 becomes (-3)^2 when you apply the zero exponent rule (the a turns into a '1' and goes away) (-3)(-3)= POSITIVE 9
