I'd like to do some kind of desert related project in the next few weeks. All I can come up with is a cactus garden. That's not a bad thing but since you guys are such creative wizards, I thought I'd see what other options you guys have.

Thanks
Heather

my kids made dioramas with shoe-boxes when we did deserts.

We did something like a diorama too, with sand in a plastic bin, toy camels, riders for the camels, etc.

I also like the diorama idea. How about sand paintings, too, using colored sands? You can also layer sand in glass containers and use toothpicks, etc. to make pictures. How about sun related activities, such as making a solar oven or making sun tea, etc.? Bake an egg on the sidewalk (maybe too late for that one - where do you live, LOL?)

How about a Desert Dessert? I'm not sure how you would do it, but I bet they would never forget it.

Crumbled vanilla wafers (sand) over chocolate or vanilla pudding (or both). Add in some "rocks", perhaps (which could be anything, really). Maybe some gummy snakes, spiders, etc.

How about a (research) collage with the different species that can survive in desert conditions.

www.homeschoolinthewoods (http://www.homeschoolinthewoods) has a free desert unit study. They usually have some hands on projects. I think for the desert one of them was something like a desert in a plastic bin, but I believe there was at least one more project.

We are studying the Sahara and the DK book around the clock with animal of the desert is really great. I found DD with it in the bathroom. It goes into details that a lot of people don't realize.

Our world culture book has a project with sand art (layered in a jar) then you see how the sand dunes are constantly changing by shifting the jar around.
