Please solve this family conflict for us! We are at the end of unit 1, year 1 of TOG which means we're done with ancient Egypt and still wandering in the desert with the Israelites. I have 2 read alouds saved and only time to read 1. Older ds and I will definitely read the other on our own time. It's time to start a new book (we just finished The Hobbit), I can't decide which one to choose and the kids are evenly split. So, you choose. Kids are 12, 10, 8, and 4 and very good listeners. This is our first year with TOG coming from Sonlight where we really liked the read aloud selections. Thanks for your help and may the best book win!

Both were good. God King is a bit easier and shorter. Cat of Bubastes is very long. If you're on a time frame, this may make a difference to you.

DD has read them both. She says God King hands down.

We ended up shelving The Cat of Bubastes since it was too long and wordy as a read aloud for our age group (7 was the oldest). It might work better for your set. I haven't read the other option. There was one we did read that we liked called Casting the Gods Adrift (http://www.amazon.com/Casting-Gods-Adrift-Ancient-Egypt/dp/0812626842/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1224614526&sr=1-2) by Geraldine McCaughrean. Our library had it. :)

I loved God King. We started listening to Cat of Bubastas on audio and it just went on and on and on... I think it would be great for an older student who enjoys reading. God King is a better read-aloud, in my opinion.

We LOVED God King. We also read Hittite Warrior and are now in the middle of The Eagles Have Flown. Fabulous reading! My kids love Williamson.
They did not enjoy Cat. They are 6,9, and 11.

God King hands down. My dd did try Cat of Bubastes but couldn't get through it. Overall, we're not fans of Henty.

and never got through it. In fact, we never got past the first tape.
My kids (12, 9, 7) absolutely panned it and called it a great cure for insomnia. And this from kids who loved to be read to thanks to SL!

Sorry I didn't vote because I don't have first-hand experience with either. I have TOG yr 1 redesigned and God King is listed as a read-aloud for U3. You may want to save God King until then; however I don't know the content of U3 off the top of my head.

If you only have time for one, my vote would be for the Golden Goblet.

Of the two you selected I would pick God King.
I would also like to recommend The Golden Goblet, it was really good.:)
