Does anyone use the WWE workbook book selections as a literature guide (outside of the history genre, obviously) for either read aloud selections each week or as assigned literature for the student's daily silent reading?

Thanks!

We do! We're on week 10 in WWE, and so far this year, we've read 6 of the 10 books that they've used. It's a great source for book recommendations!

When I read the excerpt from 101 Dalmations, the boys really wanted to hear the original story. So I got it out on cd from the library. They really liked it. We already have read most of the books from the excerpts.

Using WWe as a lit guide is a relatively new use for me, but I can't quite see the child reading it to himself. Most of the selections are from good quality novels. My dd5 is reading well, but has a looong way to go until she can read the books herself.

I am thinking of ordering the books though, and adding them to our read-alouds or for my dd7's reading list.

We do! We have read 4 of the 8 we've come across so far and have plans to read 3 more of them soon...the one I chose NOT to read was Caddie Woodlawn; I checked it out, read it myself, and decided my 5yo son would probably not like it all that much. I thought it kind of boring, myself.

Thanks for your replies! Do you find that reading one book a week is doable? Do you read the selection during the day or for bedtime? Just curious :)

We don't read them at the same time as we are seeing them in WWE...Pinocchio, for example, is a 1-2 day read; whereas The Wind in the Willows has 12 long, dense chapters (we have been reading this book since before WWE came out...probably for MONTHS...and we do it as a bedtime story). The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has 24 chapters in it and my son is reading it on his own timetable. We are reading both Alice books and there are 12 chapters in each. This one we read together, whenever we feel like reading. So it really varies for us!

Good luck with whatever/however you decide to do it!

I guess that the version of Pinocchio you have is abridged, LOL. My copy is as lengthy as any of the other books you mention. But - it is really, really good. If you can, check out a translation from the original. It's a favorite at our house.
