There are so many different types on the market these days.

The best sled I've ever been on was a cookie sheet. Wild and out of control! The next best was a traditional sled with metal runners. I think you need well packed, almost icy snow for that one. The overall best commercial sled I've purchased has been a flat bottomed plastic toboggan style. It will go on almost no snow. The snow can even be slushy. It even worked once when we had little more than a good hard frost.

We purchased simple, foam sleds with handles but if you can find the plastic disc kind they will be able stay on easier. A tobogan can be fun also for several sledders at a time. Not much help sorry....

We don't get much snow but when we do, our kids have had great sleds made from old tires, flattened cardboard boxes, big frisbees and other type discs!

Our kids have GT Racers - I like them because they steer and have brakes. :)

I like the plastic molded toboggan style. It has edges that keeps the kids in, it's light, so my dd5 can drag it up the hill. Good for deeper snow and of course slick hills. For an adult I would go inflatable. My friend had one and it was soo nice. No bumps to jar the bones:)

Our favorites were always the round disc ones. They will go down any amount of snow and IMO are the most fun! One thing my kids miss about MI is sledding (we moved the disc sled to MIL's in NY, hopefully we will get there next winter!)
