My 6yo wants to learn to diagram sentences. Her reading/writing skills are definitely up to it, but it seems WAY too early for this. OTOH, I don't want to pass up her enthusiasm and then fight with her about this in a few more years. I don't know why she wants to do this, maybe Betsy & Tacy had to? Another obstacle: product of the public schools that I am, I don't know how to diagram a sentence. :o

Any thoughts? I'm considering starting this with her if I can find a resource that I can learn as I go, but willing to drop it for a while if she loses interest. Right now she's working in a 1st grade writing book, basically capitalization & punctuation, that's no challenge for her but I use it mostly for the handwriting practice. Next I have a 3rd grade grammar book for her, but it also doesn't include diagramming. I'm not inclined to use R&S. Is there anything else out there that would teach diagramming alone?

Thanks!

My son age 7 is diagramming in FLL 3. He loves it, too.

This link sends you to a great tutorial to get you started with diagramming so you can help your daughter.

You might also check out Mary Daly's Elementary Diagramming Work Text and The First Whole Book of Diagrams which is intended to teach you along with your student.

6 or 7 isn't too young to begin simple diagramming.

Hope you both have fun!
Good Luck!

That link looks great - very manageable - thanks! If I can tear myself away from watching Jane's avatar, I may actually get started on this. I'm learning so much more now than I ever did in school - hopefully I'll come out as educated as the dc.

We have Mary Daly's The Complete Book of Diagrams (http://www.riggsinst.org/catalog02.htm) (scroll down to about the middle of the webpage), and it will help teach you, as the parent, most or all that you need to know in order to diagram. Also, use a good grammar program. I recommend Rod & Staff or Abeka. We did use First Language Lessons for my youngest in 1st grade, and she did very well with that; then we moved into Abeka for 2nd grade.

Diagraming may seem mysterious at first, but it's really not that difficult once you get the hang of it. It's a way to graph out the structure of a sentence, and it's done in a very logical fashion.

HTH!

We are using this for our grammar program this year and it's been great for us - very thorough but very gentle at the same time. I learned to diagram one year in 6th grade and then never again. I understand now so much better than I did then! For my visual ds7 right-brained learner I think diagramming will be a very valuable skill.

I switched to Shurley Grammar 2 this year with dd7 and we're LOVING it. Dd LOVES the diagramming and sings the jingles all. day. long.

We only used Shurley 5, but there was absolutely no diagramming in it, only parsing. Do they really diagram in Shurley 2?

You know, you're right. It's not diagramming, it's classifying sentences that is covered in Shurley. Whoops. I totally goofed on this one.

We use Growing With Grammar. My 8 year old LOVES to diagram. Anytime he sees we have to diagram, he gets so excited and gets right to it! I have never in my life diagrammed a sentence. I even contemplated putting it aside for now, but he loves it. My son is 8 and GWG is the 3rd grade curr.

I am using FLL3 with my 6.5yo son and he too likes diagramming.

My son loved FLL 3. I think it provides a good way to introduce diagramming. We gave up on waiting for FLL 4 to come out, so we went ahead and ordered GWG 4. It's okay so far, but I think that FLL 3 would work better for a 6-year-old.
