the Kingfisher Science and History Encylclopedias along with the Usborne Natural World due to all the recommendations here. It's been over 2 years and we don't use them.
What we do use are: Webster's American Family Dictionary, Thesaurus - we have the "Clear and Simple", but it doesn't have enough word choices in it so I'm looking at other options, the boys really like the Scholastic Spelling Dictionary, and the "Everything You Need to Know About" homework series. We have the set (Science, American History, World History, Math, and English) and it's used daily.

I personally prefer Usborne over Kingfisher. I have many, many Usborne titles, some for fun, some for curriculum. A partial list (off the top of my head):
Encyclopedia of:
Ancient World
Science
Geography
World History
History of Greeks
Greek and Norse Legends
Alexander the Great
Mysteries and Marvels of Science
Illustrated Dictionary of Math
Living Long Ago
Wild Places
Knights
Castles
Time Travelers
Aesop's Fables
Complete Book of Art Ideas
Art Treasury
How to Draw Horses
Children's World Atlas
First Thousand Words (we have):
French
Spanish
Latin
Russian
Hebrew
Arabic
Farmyard Tales
We have various others - fun readers, activity books, cookbooks, etc.
You really cant go wrong with Usborne titles! I like DK too, but I love the books we have listed above.
AND, NO, I am NOT a rep - - -

My daughter has worn out the Usborne Book of World History (not to be confused with the Internet-linked encyclopedias). It has lots of pictures and just enough text on each page.

We have enjoyed the Kingfisher First Human Body and First Animal encyclopedias. When questions come uo, it's nice to be able to pull them off the shelf, and my kids also enjoy simply looking at the pictures.

I enjoy both Usborne & Kingfisher and used them all the time, especially during SOTW 1 & 2 years. I have Kingfisher's World History and Usborne's Ancient History (a combo of several books actually).
I also recommend the Usborne Shakespeare book--my oldest dd now loves Shakespeare and will be primed for later readings of the original.
The most popular book in the house is Usborne's Children's Encyclopedia, a sort of catch-all colorful info-packed book. All my kids love it!
Some books I don't use as often are the Usborne Art books.

Ds (5) really likes looking through the Kingfisher First Animal Encyclopedia. I'm thinking of getting the Kingfisher First Human Body Encyclopedia too, but I'm undecided between this one and Reader's Digest's.

My kids love the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. They like any Usborne book about animals.

We've found the Kingfisher "first encyclopedias" way too basic. My dc want more info. We really like Living Long Ago from Usborne, but haven't found much more from them that we use.

My girls love have loved the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. They really don't touch any of the Usborne anymore, except for the Usborne Encyclopedia of World History- Internet Linked.
