I heard today that Saxon intends to get out of the homeschool market. Is this really true?

A bigwig company bought them. Can't remember who.

So, I figure they'll go where their profit is.

UGH!!! I sure hope not. We've bounced around the first 2 years of hsing starting with Saxon on then trying others the next year. We're now back with Saxon and I couldn't see changing to anything else. My kids just get it, so I hope they stay in the market.

I guess I'd better decide quick if Saxon is the math curricula for us. We are on lesson 45 and so far we are off to a sloooow start. Not bad, not good. I'm still deciding.

I don't think they've been 'officially' in the home school market for very long to begin with - - not nearly as long as hs'ers have been using their products, at any rate!

And Saxon texts are very easy to find used on ebay, at thrift stores, bookstores, etc. Five years ago, I bought some very old teacher manuals, and ordered the workbooks to go with them online. They were definitely classroom versions, I had no trouble ordering them, and I'm nearly certain the home school version didn't exist yet.

I think those came along when Harcourt bought Saxon just a couple of years ago, and supposedly those were the ones hs'ers were "allowed" to buy. Now Harcout has been bought by Houghton Mifflin, and who knows what will happen now.

For 5/4 and up, there should be no worries finding used texts. Finding workbooks for levels k-3 would be the potential problem.

Before panic sets in...if you were really concerned about it I would contact Saxon, or whoever, directly. I work at a homeschool book store where we carry Saxon, that we purchase through Harcourt, and we have had no notification that the homeschool books would no longer be available.

I wrote them an email after I read the replies here. I was just wondering if this was common knowledge before I contacted them. I'll post when I get their reply.

Thanks everyone!

That would be a crazy move on their part. I imagine the homeschool sector is lucrative.

I doubt it's true. They may not go o hs conferences and such but why refuse to sell your product? They are out to make money so I would bet they will keep selling to anyone who wants to buy them.

If not, there is a huge used market because they are non consumable. We could use them for generations just on what is already out there.

Saxon responded to my email (very quickly) and said that there were no plans to get rid of Saxon Homeschool (as far as this particular person knew).
