It's the most fun to just go see the picture ... it's here (I snapped it in Laguna Beach two days after Christmas). See if you can pick out in the water what I noticed AFTER we got home! Yikes! http://writes-and-wrongs.blogspot.com/2008/02/shark-bait.html

And if the image doesn't show up in the blog post for some reason, you can also find it here:

maybe to make you feel better,...they could more likely be dolphins.

I live in So. Ca and it is more likely to spot dolphin fins like that.

Once, when I was swimming in Corona Del Mar, I looked up and spotted a fin in front of me maybe 3 feet from me. I panicked and turned around and got to the shore as fast as I could without looking back. When I got pretty much out of the water I turned around and realized it was a pod of dolphins, and they were swimming around, being curious with everyone in the water. I got back in. They were amazing.

I'm not an expert on fins, maybe if you take an enlarged picture with you to an aquarium, someone might be able to tell you for sure.

I always tell my kids that sharks don't like people, they stay away from people...it's just the unfortunate surfers dressed like seals that sometimes have bad encounters with them.

beautiful photo, by the way!

That IS a dolphin, not a shark. Dolphin's fins have the more curved top, sharks are more pointed. It is a Dolphin, not a shark, so don't worry. :)

Being the shark person I am, please tell me you don't really say this? I don't know how old your kids are, but even the youngest can understand "mistaken identity" becasue that's why surfers get attacked, not because "unfortunate surfers dress like seals". And ummm, sharks may not like us for a regular meal, but they will attack us when they are hungry, especially at the time she shot that picture.

Wow, not one but two. Sure hope that GothicGyrl is right and they were just some friendly dolphins. I'd love to swim with the dolphins - sharks, not so much. ;)

Oh, cool! I'm glad to know they're most likely dolphins (although it didn't matter; no way were we actually getting IN the Pacific in December).
