If I am using this myself, to try to keep up with my kids,, which resources do I need?
Thanks.

I bought the text (Familia Romana), the workbook (Exercitia Latina I) and the "college companion" which covers the grammar and whatnot (I think it replaces three other books... The Latine Disco, Grammatica Latina, and the Latin-English Vocabulary book)
And so far so good! ;) I've only just started, so I'll defer to anyone who has done this longer. LOL

If you have a Mac, it's worth getting the CD-ROM (http://www.amazon.com/Lingua-Latina-Familia-Excertia-Grammatica/dp/8790696131/)in addition to the books. The CD-ROM has both levels, audio, and interactive exercises. The Windows CD-ROMs are split up into more than one package. Even with the CD-ROM, you'd probably still want the text, however, as the pages don't automatically advance (and you have to scroll to boot) while the audio is playing. It's workable with just the CD-ROM, but is much more convenient with the text.

The only other item I'd suggest is "Colloquia Personarum", which contains stories that coincide with each chapter in Familia Romana. It's just extra practice with the grammar/vocabulary. The stories are rather humorous.

Thanks! So the Lingua Latina instructor's manual is not necessary? I appreciate the input!

No. If you get the new College Companion guide, you don't need any other instructor's materials. Before the College Companion came out, Latine Disco was a helpful supplement, since it explained the Latin grammar in English. The College Companion does that, so Latine Disco is no longer needed.
There is another guide, Latine Doceo, which is *slightly* helpful, in that it gives a few ideas on how to implement the program in the classroom. It is defininitely not necessary, though.

Which of the Lingua Latina materials has the translations for Roma Eterna and/or Familia Romana?

No, I don't think that's right. I don't see the answers to the exercises in the new College Companion--I just got it so maybe I'm missing something. I think you still need the Teacher's Materials if you want the answers. The College Companion just gives fuller explanations of the grammar.

Yes, you're right - I'm sorry - my bad. You need to buy the instructor's materials guide, which contains the answers to the pensa & exercitia:

Does the teacher's manual have a translation of the text? Is that what "Answer key text Book 1 and 2" means? Do any of you have the teacher's manual? Is it hard for a homeschooler to get?

As of this time, there is no manual with translation of the text. I think Mr. Oerberg would see that as defeating the purpose of his natural/immersion methods. There is no real teacher's manual. The College Companion gives the Latin/English vocabulary, along with explanations of the grammar for each chapter. It is helpful for self-learners and those who need clearer English explanations of the grammar. It does offer sentence translations from time-to-time as it pertains to explaining the grammar. The Instructor's Materials book has the answers for the Pensa and Exercitia.
I will say this about Lingua Latina - it is NOT teacher-friendly. If you are teaching it without a Latin background, you will have to work FAR ahead of your students - at least 10-15 Capitula. You have to figure out what to teach, and what not to teach when it comes to the grammar. Some students will not be ready for certain concepts. It is deceptively easy at first, but by the 6th chapter, they are already covering the passive voice. This is the chapter that many hs'ers find themselves crashing and burning. I love this text, and I think it is excellent for those willing to tweak it for their own use, but it is not going to take you by the hand and show you what to do next. I switched to LL mid-year after using Henle with a few students in my co-op. We made it through Cap. VIII, but I had to do a lot of tweaking. I got a bunch of good ideas from the LL e-list, which I used with my students. It was fun, but it was a lot of work for me.
Many people use LL in conjunction with a traditional grammar/translation text, like Henle. They work several lessons in Henle, then go through LL until they hit concepts they haven't covered, and then back to Henle, etc.
I think that is a really great way to get the best of both worlds. :)

Is it hard for a homeschooler to get?The Student's Manual (Latine Disco) is the closest you're going to get, and is IME more than adequate to help with any translation difficulties. It also give added historical and contextual background and more explicit grammatical instruction than the text, and (I'm pretty sure) is the only Lingua Latina book written in English. I wish I'd had this when doing Lingua Latina in college.
I haven't seen the College Companion. From the description is sounds like it combines Latine Disco, Grammatica Latina, and Latin-English Vocabulary I. Is this the case?
FWIW, if you're using CD-ROMs, the exercises are interactive, so you don't need the answer keys.

Thanks! This helps a lot. We have used Henle. My older boys are half way through Henle 2, a younger child is 2 Units into Henle 1. I am having the older ones start reading through Familia Romana. I hope to outsource Latin III next year and thought it would help if they had more than Henle. I think I will try to combine Lingua Latina with Henle more with the child that is in Henle 1.
I had thought about using Roma Aeterna for Latin 3 here at home with the older 2 next year, but I think Latin is getting beyond me.

Thanks for posting that, but too late! I already placed my order, and it has actually already shipped, w/o the instructor's manual. Let's hope I can push my way through without it, or with the help of the yahoo group. I can always order it later; thanks for letting me know!

Ack! Shelly, I'm so sorry. If you plan on making use of the Pensa and Exercitia, you are going to need the keys. Unless, of course, you are strong in Latin.
When/if you order it, please let me pay for the shipping. (I can paypal you the $) It is the least I can do. I have to learn to be more careful when I answer posts.

That's very generous of you, but you certainly aren't responsible for my order!! I appreciate it, but I'll take care of it.

I sort of feel responsible, since my post was the one that said you only needed the College Companion. If you change your mind, I'd be more than happy to cover the shipping for you. :)
In any case, please share how things go with LL. I am always interested to hear how others are doing with this program.

I certainly will let you know how it is going. I'm eager for it to arrive so I can get started!
Thanks. And if I need any help from the teacher's guide before I order it and it arrives, I'll just email you with ALL my silly questions. Haha!
Seriously, no problem with the order; I appreciate the information you did give me. Looking forward to starting with this new program!
