After posting my other thread about adding in American history, it has me thinking. Several of you felt that SOTW alone had enough U.S. history in it. So, I'm thinking of adding nothing else to it.
Does SOTW 3 and 4 include studying U.S. Geography? If it doesn't, at what point are you teaching this to your children and with what materials? If it makes a difference, my dd will be doing SOTW 3 as a fourth grader. If we only use SOTW, we will probably also get through SOTW 4 because we do history daily. At least, that has been the case with 1 and 2.
Thanks!:)

Every chapter (or every section in SOTW 4) has a map that corresponds with the specific topic read about. So, US map work comes up with any chapter that is dealing with American events. You do not do any detailed overall U.S. Geography, only mapwork associated with certain historical events. I hope that makes sense.

Thank you Beth, that makes sense. I am just trying to figure out what I need (sight unseen) for all our curriculum and sometimes the information on the web is just not enough.

I do add in more geography work, as I don't think SOTW includes nearly enough of that.

We will be doing SOTW 1 & SOTW 2 in one year. We do history 30 min. daily. Will that be enough time to finish both this year or do we need to do 1 hour daily.

Well, if you're just reading a chapter at a time and not doing any extra reading, discussion, narration, writing, projects from the activity guide, etc., then I think that 30 minutes is enough to just read a chapter. So I can see how you could go through both volumes in one year.
With those two volumes, maybe adding in the mapwork would still bring you in at about 30 minutes because it's pretty simplistic. And maybe if they do any of the coloring and do that while you're reading then you'd still make it. But if you plan on adding in other things, then I would think you'd need more like an hour......

I really don't pay much attention to the amount of time we spend on history but I would say it's about 30-45 minutes. We read half a chapter per day and then do one of the art projects. If we don't like any of the projects, I let her color a picture. We don't do the map work as directed but we do look at the map and discuss where we are talking about. We also don't add in extra books for the most part. Once in a great while we do but I think at this age that SOTW is plenty.
