As we consider curriculum choices for homeschooling next year, I plan to start with the Ancients in history. Is SOTW 1 too easy for a third-grader?

No, SOTW is a multi-age curriculum. I think that it is great for many ages.

SOTW would be fine for a 3rd grader. I know lots of people who use it for even older children. Our oldest still listens to the SOTW CDs. If you feel you want more you can always supplement using the book lists provied.

Absolutely not--Sonlight actually uses them for 10-12 year olds.
Some of the Activity Guide rec's for extra reading might be a little on the simple side--but there's still plenty there, and the activities can cover a wide range. Narration can, of course, be used by kids up until the later elementary grades (and some say higher).
I think SOTW Ancients would be perfect for 3rd grade.

We love it! Started using it at 7, and at 8 we are still using it.

Compared to a traditional school textbook approach, STOW or Sonlight will seem "light". However, both are very age appropriate and teach the children to enjoy learning. Enjoy your first year.

I loved it and learned a lot from it, so I think it would be great for the age you are looking at. You can always supplement with the extra reading if you feel that you need more.

Oh no...it was wonderful for 3rd grade. i thought it was way over the head of my 1rst grader...and I am saving SOTW 1 for when he is in 3rd grade....
Our Hx cycle may be a bit late and we may end up only doing 2 cycles..BUT that is 2 more than most kids get. I think unless a child is very mature, most of the material goes right over their head at 6 years old. I spend those years doing lots of fairy tales, biography type books and loads of beautiful and fun picture books. I think 3rd grade is the PERFECT age to begin SOTW.
Have fun!

See, and I'm worried that SOTW 1 will be over ds' head in first next aeyr (he'll be six).
Definitely great for third grade!

We did it in third grade and just finished on Monday as a matter of fact. I think it would have been a waste of time when my ds was in first grade. He may have enjoyed listening to the stories, but I bet it would all be gone by now if I asked him any questions. Third grade was a perfect fit for us.

We have been using SOTW for my 11 and 9 1/2 year olds for 18 months now.
There is so much you can add, if you feel it is necessary.
It is a wonderful resource and I'm sure you and your 3rd grader will love it.

SOTW 1 would be a great fit for third. Many of the books listed will be much more on your dc's level. My ds6 (at the time) was a very strong reader but still most of the books ended up being read-a-louds. For your dc they may get to be more independent readers! :)
My advice is to get the audio CD's by Jim Weiss too. We didn't use them last year for SOTW1 b/c I didn't even know they existed until half way through the year. This year we are loving it and I am going to get SOTW 1 for my dc for Christmas so we can listen for review!

It's not a text book like you are thinking of. It is like a super cool story book. Then you get the activity guide that recommends other books you can get from the library that are great supplements, projects, questions, coloring pages..... way more than you can do. You choose the extra books and coloring and projects that work for you and really enjoy history.
Our first year we read and did the coloring pages. Figuring everything else out was plenty our first year. I use it more fully now.
