View Full Version : TWEM - Reading Order?

Hi folks,
I'm still just skimming through TWEM at the moment and haven't started any of the listed books as yet but I was wondering why the reading order is by genre rather than chronology?
Is there a reason SWB has laid it out this way? Is there anything to be gained by following it, over following the same list in chronological order (starting with The Epic of Gilgamesh instead of Don Quixote)?
Still trying to decide where to begin,
Neil.

Well, I don't have an answer for you, as I am about to take this journey myself, but I just wanted to give you a bump.
However, since I can't decide whether to start with Don Quixote, or Epic of Gilgamesh myself... I'm going to do them both. I will satisfy my need to jump into the novels right away, as well as start as the beginning. I will reevaluate what I'm going to do after that, assuming I ever get through those two books. :p Since I have also just started learning Latin it might be a while though.

Hi Ellyndria,
Thanks for the 'bump'. I've been asking similar questions on the TWEM Yahoo Group but I figured I had nothing to lose by asking the same question in two different, though related, places.
I'm thinking that I'll do my reading in chronological order as that seems most appropriate, but I'm still wondering why SWB wants her readers to read the recommended books by genre instead.
Obviously, if I get a good reason why SWB has requested that of her readers then I'll change my ideas from reading chronologically.
Thanks,
Neil.

This is only a guess, but I think it's so you can compare the works within the genre. It's easier to compare a novel with a novel, an historical work with an historical work, etc. You can also see the development of the genre that way.

This is right. It is so you can compare works in the genre and she starts with the novel because it is easiest to read.
I've just started Don Quixote.:D

And so you can practise the critical thinking skills for that genre. You don't get that sort of practise if you jump between genres too often.
