View Full Version : measuring children's feet for shoes

I've always purchased my boys' shoes at Stride Rite because of our need for very wide widths. I've discovered that I can get the same shoes on Shoebuy for much cheaper after figuring in no tax, shoebuy coupon codes, and my member discount. The only problem is that I'm a little insecure about fitting them for the correct size. I've thought about buying one of the Brannock sizing devices, but they're not cheap, and I'm not sure I'd know how to use it. Is it unreasonable to take my kids to Stride Rite for measurements, but not to purchase the shoes at the brick and mortar store? Or should I only ask them to size my kids each time if I'm willing to buy the shoes there? Anyone else have one of these devices at home for sizing children's shoes?

Shoe sizer (http://www.payless.com/Images/PSSSizingChart_KIDS.pdf) from Payless.
I've used it and it worked fine. I rarely take my boys to the shoe store--I measure them and then go find their shoes. We don't have any special needs when it comes to shoes, though.

I am embarrased that I have no idea of what size shoes my children wear.

Have you looked inside the shoes they have? The size is usually printed inside near the heel or on the underside of the tongue. (That is, if the print hasn't worn off completely!)

but if I am chatting with other mom's and they ask something I should know it is so humbling. The other day I was at the OB and couldn't remember the birth weights of my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th child. Sheesh.....

:D
I can't remember any of that. I know my first was 7.5#s, and my 2nd was a tad under 6 (I think-he was a month early), and the other 3 were in between somewhere.
I only know my boys' shoe sizes because their shoes are identical (buy one get one 1/2 off :D) so they when they are getting on shoes they holler "I've got an 8-give it to J! No, that one's mine--I wear a 13! etc".
I think you get a pass on all this stuff when you have more than 2 :D. At least that's what I'm claiming.

I get it :D.
That's what I get for posting while I'm cooking dinner and fending off the baby (who isn't really a baby, but is in a cycle of being spoiled by his brothers and unspoiled by his parents). If only I could remember his name :p.

What about sizing the child at Payless or another other store?
fwiw, Little Soccer Dude had such wide feet as a baby/toddler that Stride Rite shoes barely fit. They were square shaped feet--as wide as long. Fortunately he grew into the width. He wears regular (normally priced) shoes now :)
