Tainted milk crisis hits more global companies (http://apnews.myway.com/article/20080927/D93F1MIO0.html) :glare:

This is scary.

What is wrong with people???? What kind of people would do that to food? I'm just horrified. DH mentioned a few days ago that there was a problem with Chinese milk, but we only drink Stonyfield, so I didn't bother to follow up. It never occurred to me that it would extend to milk products as well. That makes me just furious. Those poor babies and children!

All of these scandals bring to mind Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. It's not for the faint of heart or the sausage lover...

After reading everything last week, we have decided to no longer purchase any Nestle products. We do have a few that we are still using up (french vanilla coffemate for one), but when I went to buy other products this week, I deliberately avoided anything manufactured by Nestle.

Wow! They're recalling Cadbury chocolate! And looking into reports of tainted Oreos and M&Ms!

My favorite color may no longer be chocolate. :crying:

I love Ghirardelli chocolate. I just went to their website and from my quick read it seems like it is still entirely US manufactured.

Another good reasons to support small, local companies.

We have choices here in the US regarding which manufacturer's we can choose to purchase from. However, it's not that easy elsewhere. In Europe, in the grocery stores I was in, I was often able to find one brand of anything. It was often Nestle.

Yeah! Ghirardelli is my favorite. I am glad it is still entirely manufactured in the US, but where do their "milk" ingredients come from? Did they say where?

Knowing the farmer where you buy your food is best IMHO.

At times like this I just want to buy some land and become self-sufficient. Raise my own food, live off-grid, just become a pioneer. Doesn't that sound great right about now?:D

When something like this happens, I am glad that I purchase most of my food directly from the farmer. I also do not purchase a lot processed food. I do purchase some, but not a lot.

Me too. :iagree:

I'm feeling really good about the fact that we've gone dairy and gluten free. We got dragged into it kicking and screaming all the way. But, now I don't have to worry about processed food, because we hardly eat any now. Back in the day though- 2 packages of oreos would last about minutes here.

Makes you pretty grateful to know where your milk comes from, doesn't it?

Yes, we are dairy-free in our house as well b/c my 8 yo has a dairy allergy. Why, oh why is the U.S. the very last to respond to this disaster? Could it be we don't want to make China mad?

At this point, you are correct. No one has gotten sick in the USA but, I am not going to wait until someone does get sick in the USA. Their food is unsafe.

We do owe them an awful lot of money....:glare:

Does anyone have a list of affected products or companies? I don't watch the news. I figure if there is something big you'll will tell me.

I really try to avoid buying anything made in or with ingredients from China. The big old global economy makes it very hard though.

Their food is unsafe.

But what exactly is unsafe? I am having trouble understanding what to avoid. Oreos don't even contain milk. We have milk allergies, so I know. Are there certain brands to avoid that contain milk products?

Yeah, what she said!

I don't think the watchdogs even really know for sure yet. The concern over the Oreos had to do with the frosted kinds, I believe, and I also saw that Cadbury is recalling (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/sep/29/china) some of its products. It doesn't look like it has reached here yet, and who knows whether it will. It's the not knowing that's the scary part, though :(

from Associated Press: When rumors of melamine-related recalls of Oreos and other sweets spread by phone text messages and on the Internet earlier this week, Kraft Foods Inc. hastened to reassure customers that none of its Oreo-brand products contain milk powder from China.

Oreo fillings contain no milk, while Oreo cookies with icing on them use milk powder from Australia, it said. "Regardless of where they are produced, Kraft products are always held to the highest quality and safety standards," the company said.

Maybe we should start lobbying Congress for better labeling. Most of our food labels just say "distributed by" or "manufactured for". I would like to know where the source of my food is coming from- all of it!

I just read that you need to look into all candy bought, and collected, on Halloween. Ughhh!

Actually, if we go trick or treating, I have my dd dump it all, and I buy her a mixed bag of her choice, but even that I'm going to have to check out first.

We even have to check out candy!! That just seems so... so... un-American!! Um, well, I guess that's the point, huh? (I don't mean that in a nasty way, just a duh sort of way)

How do you check it? Like, Google each brand name? The individually wrapped pieces don't have to include any real information on them, do they? Man, this is such a nightmare.

Exactly. On many packaged foods, you have no idea where the ingredients came from. I'm guessing that a single package has ingredients produced in many different countries.
