Do I have to buy 2 student texts & 2 student labs? I usually like each kid to have their own book to read along with me or to work out of, but this program is a bit on the pricey side.

I bought one of everything. I copied the lab pages for each child. I did this because I have 2 more coming up and did not want to have to buy again. The Connects to Language is a waste of money, IMO. It has worked so far. I don't think you need each child to have their own text for this. Mine either read it separately or I will read aloud. It is pricey to buy doubles.

Yes, due to the price I think one will have to suffice. But I was rather excited about the Connecting to Language book. Can you tell me more about why you didn't like it?

The text book is large format and fairly easy to share.
I also have the connects to language book and didn't like it. It's hard to put my finger on, but it seemed a bit lame - directionless somehow. The activities weren't interesting and didn't seem to go anywhere. We rarely stop using something after only a few chapters, but we did with this.

Well, darn. It seems like it should be interesting though, doesn't it? Good concept, bad execution I guess. I was imagining that they would take the words used in each lesson, and give an etymology lesson on them both as a way to help the kids recognize variations of those words in the future, and to demystify the long words and make them more approachable.
