The one from 1958? He saw a clip on the news about it and he is just fascinated by the whole idea of this 'alien movie' from long ago. I don't let him watch even pg13...so how would something this old compare even though it is classified as 'horror'?

kids now would think it's hysterically funny, but I saw that movie as a little kid and it terrorized me for days (and nights!)
I don't know - my 6 year old has seen all the LOTR movies and lots more...maybe they're more used to things these days.

Just my opinion, it's more what they call "cheesy horror" than anything.. b-rated even fits. The "blob" is some sort of fake CGI thing that you almost have to laugh at because of how slow it moves. :) It is, and was at the time, lauded for being "scary"... but honestly, it's so far from scary....
In today's world, it would get a PG 13.. I don't remember any bad language...it wasn't really allowed back then. I don't remember any real sex scenes (if any at all) or anything like that. Maybe a scene or two of kids "makin' out" in the back seat of a car (that is, they are smooching, remember "makin' out" back then was kissing), but those are shadowed almost.. ummm, I honestly don't think there is anything bad in it at all.

It's cheesey now :-) but when I saw it in the theater, I walked out during the first scene when the farmer finds the meteor, and prods it, and the blob creeps out and consumes his arm...yeah, I was outta there!
A child who doesn't see these kinds of movies very often might well be scared, as I was back then. *Now* I laugh through it, but *then*....

I saw both versions. The 50's version is a bit cheesy but still scary (scared me out of my seat). The newer version is alot scarier than the 50's version. To answer your question, for me NOPE!! I will not allow neither of my boys to watch it. I want preserve their innocense (sp?) longer. I have a 13 yr old and 10 yr old boy. I also have an 8 yr old dd. For us if we decided to let them watch it, it will be when they are much older. I have no desire to see it again (neither versions).

Well, I KNOW I wouldn't let him watch the remake, which is Rated R and likely truly scary. But when you say the original scared you....how old were you? I wouldn't mind him watching it if it was just a cheesy old black and white. He does have a very vivid and looooong imagination and is then afraid to go to bed alone (or maybe that is his excuse ), so I want to be careful. I will probably just not allow it....but he has already found it on Netflix and was about to sign me up for a free trial to Netflix. (note to self: install PC controls tomorrow)

I've been wondering about that movie myself. Many moons ago, there was a station that played movies for a whole week. My sister and I watched that one everyday. We were 9 & 10ish I think. We loved it. We acted out our fears and chattered our teeth together and clung tightly to one another. That was half the fun, having someone my own age to be scared with. As as rule I never did scary well and my extra sensitive 9yodd doesn't either. My younger 9yodd would love it. I'll wait on it though for us. That's my experience. hth

Forbidden Planet for the longest time. (We owned the VHS tape) When I finally did let them watch it they laughed hysterically through the whole thing.
That said, it would depend on the child. I would watch it myself first and judge from what I know of my kid. We've watch a lot of the very old "horror"
shows now, sometimes we let the 8yo watch, sometimes we don't. Generally speaking they are far tamer than today's shows but still would be rated pg-13. Maybe some skimpy clothing, and a few GD's, usually not much gore at all, mostly psychological type scary stuff, and very slow paced.

Thanks all. As suggested I will probably just preview it and then decide.

We let my little brother watch it, and he never ate chicken and dumplings again!
