We have always concentrated on a character trait, usually one or two a month. (Depending on which trait it is--some traits need more work than others at our home-like Patience, for ex.) Anyway, does Explorers do a good job with this aspect as well as teaching a direct story or Biblical message? Also, which book do you recommend to start? From the very FEW example pages I have seen, I thought that Jesus, My Shepherd, looks wonderful for my boys' ages. (8 & 6) Does it matter whether or not you start Old Testament or New with this program? I assume not, but thought I better inquire, just in case!

Character traits are addressed indirectly in the Bible story and more directly in the prayers. I make it a point to direct the message of the lesson towards my dd7, either by asking her straight out if she can tell me how the message affects her (or something she has done) or I'll provided an example myself about her.

We're using Jesus, My Shepherd right now :D, and as far as starting in Old or New. I prefer to keep Old Testament with Ancients so...

Ancients / Old Testament
Middle Ages/ New Testament
Early Modern/ Old Testament
Modern/ New Testament
then back to Ancients with Old Testament.

There is a difference between Beginnings II and Discovery, so next year your 8 year old might be reading for the Discovery stage while your 6 year old won't. That is something to consider, the Discovery stage is more of a straight Bible study with the scripture (not Bible story) to read and answer questions about with mapwork. If you have any more questions regarding which one would be right for you, I would contact Explorer's and get their advice.

Hope this helps

I so appreciate the help! I will be sure to check into the Discovery books. And, since I am getting ready to 'possibly' pull out my SoTW Volume 1- again- maybe I will start with the Old.
Thank you so much!:)
