I've not used either of the others so I can't speak for them. Open Office is free (and open source). I've use it for several years and have been happy with it. It is a little tricky to get installed on mac and it requires X11.app or XDarwin (X11.app is free, not sure on XDarwin). I think I can offer DH's help if needed :D

I found it more convenient for sharing files, etc., to use Microsoft.

I'm in the market for an iMac also. It is my understanding that Microsoft Office will slow down your Mac considerably unless you have extra memory and speed installed. However, they were supposed to make improvements in the 2008 edition of the Microsoft Office products that would correct the problems in previous editions.
I'm planning on trying the iworks first, and only adding Office if I can't make iworks do what I want it to do. I plan on getting the fastest/most memory available anyway, so I should be able to run Microsoft, if I decide to get it.

I would go with iWorks because Mac programs are more functional than stuff developed by Microsoft, in general. I have an iMac, too, and we use AppleWorks.

... from Office to iWork, and have been very pleased. Pages and Numbers are fabulous little programs.
