I need an easy to teach, secular Latin (must be secular) that can be used fairly independently and stresses grammar. Rosetta is out. Wheelocks was too hard for me to teach. Any ideas? This will be done over the summer, and will be used to help a kid get enough Latin so that he can go into Latin 2 in high school the next fall.

Galore Park So You Really Want to Learn Latin.
SY Latin is secular, logical and grammar based, with lots of opportunity to translate into and out of Latin. This is the URL for the publisher where you can see a chapter sample; you can order the book (make sure to order SY Latin, not Latin Prep, which moves slower for younger children) from horriblebooks.com or from bookdepository.co.uk

Can you contact the school to check what grammatical constructions have to be learned in order to join the Latin II course? Then you could see whether one book would do it or whether you need to do part of the next book.
Best wishes

I've heard very good things about the Galore Park materials from the U.K. (I'm interested in their Spanish books, not the Latin ones, though). When I asked the Hive Mind how to order Galore Park books in the U.S., Laura in China very helpfully provided the following sources and info:
horriblebooks.com buys Galore Park materials in batches at a discount and with cheap shipping. They sometimes keep extra materials on hand too.
bookdepository.co.uk ships from the UK with free shipping.

Hello, Laura in China! Hope you don't mind that I quoted your earlier post to me regarding Galore Park books. I haven't figured out how to do an official quote yet (you know, the one with the quoted text in its own little incuse box. In any case, thank you once again for the Galore Park links. I'm ordering the Spanish texts through Horriblebooks.com.

Thanks for doing that for me. I was a bit rushed earlier.

Learn to Read Latin fit the bill for us. Dd is making A's in honors Latin II after 5 chapters of this book in 8th grade. A test bank and (more importantly for me) a reading key is available from the authors upon request. Heavy translation of original text, heavy grammar.
I dunno about easy to teach -- it was semi-easy to teach, but stretchy. Not as much of a stretch by a long shot as Wheelocks. (Ack!) Dd did pass me up at the end of the year. Not sure if you could fit it all over the summer, though. Well, you'd have to push it, anyhow.

Thanks, you've all been extremely helpful. I will contact the school to find out the constructs needed (excellent idea!) and then see if either LtRL or Galore Pk will work.
This is for Sky--not sure if he will see the wisdom in doing something over the summer, or even if he will be home by then, but thought I'd do the research so I'm prepared. Thanks for the info.
