Old Versus New Version of SOTW?

I seem to remember reading something about the older versions of SOTW being preferred, but I can't find the original post anymore. Can someone tell me if they think this is true and if so, why? TIA,

I thought the only difference was in the illustrations

in the newer version, the seas on teh maps are gray instead of white, which makes the maps a bit easier to read. The stories are set off from the historical text, so that, for example, a tale about Sinbad won't be confused with actual history. There is also a time line included at the back of the book.
