Is there a certain book you follow? I have a ds 7th grade, and I want to make sure he "get it." Any suggestions - to be honest, I really think I've forgotten how to do it, myself, so I want him to get it solidly. Thanks for the advice.

If you want a workbook, check CBD.com and put "outlining" in the search box.
We use R&S English and IEW, both teach outlining.

The programs we use cover outlining, but with my oldest two I used the workbook Thirty Lessons in Outlining. You can only buy it used for over $100 and it's not worth it; however, the method of teaching was very effective.
The workbook was made up of a series of progressively more difficult essays that the student had to outline. At the end of the book the student had to outline their own essays. Very simple. I googled and found this, which is similar. It will give you an idea at least.
