We had a miserable horse day. The farrier came today and I had about seven-eight horses for him to do. He didn't get here til around 4:00. The boys wanted to ride so I sent them off on their mares with orders not to go far enough away that we had to wait on them. Hacinta the Arabian and Memphis were first and they were perfect. Jedi the pony was good.

Then I called the boys on their phone and told them to head back. After a few minutes I glance up and see one boy returning, one riderless horse returning and one boy walking. Okay, at least he's walking. This is good.
Riderless horse stops, boy eventually catches up with her, mounts up and they get back.

Shiloh the mare is next and she's fairly good. Then the nightmare begins. Mace the 18 month old is skittish but gets his trim. Then Bunni the two year old pitches a fit. She always lets me pick up her feet. She's feeling her oats. She hops, pulls back, tries to bite him, tries to bite me when I don't let her bite him, moves around. We finally get her done when I get a death grip on her ear. When I put her up she tries to charge me so I have to have a few words with her. When I'm finished I return to find the farrier and one of the kids struggling with Blaze, also two, who we're keeping for some friends.

Blaze makes Bunni look like an angel. She pulls all of Bunni's tricks plus several more. Farrier cuts himself. Ear death grip doesn't faze her. She's not scared, not hurt, just mad. We finally use a chain on her halter and across her gums and she behaves, but with ears pinned back promising vengence on me or whoever crosses her path.

When all is finished I get the story on the dumped boy. He says his mare shied at the dog bursting out of some tall grass, tried to run off and then bucked when he stopped her. And who was he riding??? SUGAR. Nice, quiet, loves to trail ride with the kids SUGAR.

Proof that the only predictable thing about horses is that they are unpredictable.

What type of seasoning do you suppose I should use for horse?

Oh no! I have no idea what seasoning to use... do they taste like chicken? :p

LOL, oh my gosh, what a day! Bring your farrier some brownies, give Sugar a talking to, and hope the youngsters forget all about it by next time? LOL, what does Clinton say... "it never happened"?

There must have been something in the air.

Even my poor, sore laminitic guy made an idiot of himself today when some riders went by our house. Jackpot has gotten so used to them, he normally just stands there and watches. This time he went nuts with the bucking and farting routine. He does a pretty good arabian imitation with his flagged tail when he does this. It's like watching a football player do ballet.

I'm just so relieved his feet feel good enough to go nuts. Whew. Technical info: feet not as hot, digital pulses not as prominent, cresty neck loosened up... movement much better and almost landing heel first. Looks like we caught it in time!

Well, at least you caught it quickly. Why do we mess with these abominable creatures anyhow? I'm exhausted.

Horse stew can't be any worse than Mountain Oysters. Sheesh! I'll never get over reading about that!
