My 10 year old dd asked today if we could do chemistry. We haven't done this yet so any help in picking a curriculum would be great....

Thanks

We're using Adventures with Atoms and Molecules according to TWTM recs. My dd is 8y, and she's enjoying it. I've looked at NOEO chemistry, but it was just too expensive for us for this grade level. But, that's a good option for something already put together for you.

We really enjoyed using "The Elements: Ingredients of the Universe" (http://ellenjmchenry.com/id98.html) by Ellen J McHenry. Rainbow Resource sell it here (http://rainbowresource.com/product/Elements+Intro+to+Chemistry+Curriculum+with+CD/022079/1221752881-1143256).

Yes, if you don't want to go with something like NOEO, I think using this book combined with an encyclopedia would be great. We used NOEO last year but I wish I had just done Adventures with Atoms. NOEO is quality, definitely. Everything is scheduled for you too, which is a bonus. But, I didn't like how the books weren't used to their fullest. I would rather use one really good book, and use it all, then use bits and pieces from several books. Also, the book on the periodic table was really dry for my dd who was 10 when we went through it.

I like NOEO and the concept, but dd wanted to just do experiments. I could have definitely simplified and spent my money on other resources. This is just me though. Many have LOVED NOEO, it just didn't work the way I wanted it to.

We enjoyed Noeo too. But it is expensive.

It's not a curriculum, but Chemistry for Every Kid (http://www.amazon.com/Janice-VanCleaves-Chemistry-Every-Kid/dp/0471620858) by Janice VanCleave has some great, easy to do experiments.

We did this, too, with an 8/9yo, and a 5/6yo. We had fun and learned a lot of basics about chemistry.

We've used this too. Her series are thoughtful and cover the range of the discipline which is good.

For the elements, ds here enjoyed "Periodic Table: Elements with Style." We found it at the library first then B&N had it for under $10. It's got a fold-out table/poster attached plus a page for each element. Easily readable for this age. Our library also had a great selection of the elements as individual books, and many selections for chemistry including experiment books focussed on one area of chemistry (like compounds or polymers).

:iagree:
We are using this, and it is one of the most fun things we do each week! I don't know anything about chemistry, and the explanations are wonderfully clear.

I just ordered this yesterday. I'm glad you're liking it. It was an impromptu purchase for me so I've been worrying if this would be worth it. :)
