Does anyone use these as the main spines for your science curriculum? For some unknown reason, I just can't get into any of the science curriculum's that I've purchased and I keep coming back to the Nature Readers. They are well-written and have great information. My boys are still young so I'm thinking of just using these, plus they enjoy listening to me read them (which is a bonus.) They had a great time looking for worms in the garden today. Sometimes I wonder if I just make it too complicated...:001_huh:

Why not? You could have them do drawings and simple narrations from what you've read. Certainly the real-life experiences of digging up worms and observing nature will instill in them a life-long appreciation of nature and keep their curiosity alive and well! And for the young ages I think nature studies are such a natural place to start with science studies! There will be plenty of years for the other things!

I use them for summer reading assignments though. My oldest (6th grade) was actually sad when he finished the last one in August this year.

I'd say that they're fine for younger children as science, but down the road you might think about adding some physical science (chemistry/physics) as well. I taught a 2-semester chemistry class several years ago for grade school kids through a local group, and my own kids still talk about things they learned there.

The books at YesterdaysClassics.com (http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/catalog/displaycatalog.php?catalog=nature) would be more engaging, you can see inside all the titles to sample them before making a decision. I know others adore the Christian Liberty Nature Readers and while they are good, we found them a bit dry, esp. in comparison to the books I'm linking for you.

aren't they wonderful? I have 2 boys, 4 & 5 years old and I'm doing kinder with them both. They LOVE science. We read a library book about spiders and they're off finding every single spider and web in the yard. This is the age of exploration and I try to limit the book work so they have just enough to inspire them and then off they go.

We love them too. :) We use them as read alouds and if something really interests us, we dig in further. With your children being so young, I think they are perfect. You can always add in some Magic School Bus books and movies to cover other science topics. We are doing 3rd grade, and this is our first real year of using a science curriculum, and even now, using Considerinig God's Creation, we are still supplementing with library books and such.
