I have some friends who are currently at the hospital doing pre-op stuff for their infant son's surgery tomorrow. The baby has craniosynostosis (premature closure of the bones in the skull) and they had planned to have a newer, less invasive type of surgery to correct that. They just found out, however, that BCBS is denying this particular surgery and is forcing them to have the older, more invasive type done. They are currently asking for prayer that BCBS will change their mind ASAP.
Here's a link (http://benandjacq.tumblr.com/) to their blog. Thanks for your prayers and good wishes.

My dd (now 13) had this surgery when she was a baby. I'm assuming it was the old surgery because it was 13 years ago. They had to remove part of her skull. It involved a transfusion. It was a very scary time for us but dd came through beautifully.
She is now 13 and has no residual affects. The only way we can tell she had the surgery is by looking very closely at her scalp. It left a zig zag scar and in some places hair won't grow but no one will ever know except for perhaps her hairdresser.
I pray that they can do the new, less invasive surgery.
Do you know where they are having the surgery?

Thanks for sharing about your daughter. I'm glad to hear she's doing well.
They are in Winston-Salem, NC.

Well, BCBS never gave approval for the new surgery so they did the old kind. He came through with flying colors, though. Thanks for all the prayers!

It's amazing how kids bounce back from these things. When my dd had the surgery we were told to prepare for a week in the hospital and at least a few days in intensive care. The night of the surgery dd looked pretty rough (eyes swollen shut, etc.) The next afternoon she still looked pretty bad but when the doctor came around with his entourage (med students) he was shocked. DD was sitting up in bed playing patty cake and peek-a-boo. Not only did he move her out of intensive care that night but told us that if she continued to do so well she could go home in a day or two, which she did. Our biggest problem when we got home is that she enjoyed playing a game where she would be sitting and then would purposely throw herself backwards on the ground. I guess she liked the attention she got the first time when we screamed for her to stop. Actually the doctor said that she wouldn't hurt her head but it sure made us nervous.
I hope your friend's son does as well. I know the parents were probably terrified (we were) but it is such a relief to have it over with.

Glad everything went well. I'll still say a prayer for them.

Praying here as well. My niece (now 9 yo) had this surgery as a baby. It was definitely scary for the family, but she came through it beautifully and you'd never know it today.
