My dd is the one in the family who uses the cell phone a lot to keep in touch with her widely-scattered friends. Dh doesn't even have a cell phone, and I use mine only for brief phone calls or text messages to keep in touch with my dd while shopping, etc.

Dd has a Virgin Mobile prepaid phone, which has worked well for us -- especially since we live in an area where reception isn't good on quite a few brands. However, now that she is using her cell phone for more and more conversations (one friend's cell phone can't communicate with our land line), I'm having to bump her monthly prepaid service up to accommodate her needs (and, yes, her wants).

Right now I am paying $45 per month so that she doesn't run out of text messages or minutes. Is that reasonable, or should I be looking for other companies? We have gotten stung by service contracts in the past, so I'm partial to month-to-month over year-long contracts, but I'm willing to reconsider. Or maybe we should look for a family plan?

I should add that for $45 a month dd gets up to 1,000 text messages, 300 daytime minutes, and 1000 minutes after 7 pm and weekends.

We use cell phones ALOT. I spend $150/mo. Three kids spend $75 total. DH spends approx $700/mo, but is work reimbursed.

I would encourage a strong family plan with unlimited text.
