Dd is doing GWG 4 this year after GWG 3 last year. We are on lesson 2.6 (meaning we have finished the first chapter and are doing the 6th lesson in ch 2 [for you non GWG folks]). So far, it is ALL review. Dd is getting bored. She asked this morning, "When are we going to learn something new? I'm tired of review".

So, I need some direction. Do we stick it out? Switch programs? I am open to switching, but I dont know what to consider.

We are not doing every problem/sentence. So, we are moving pretty quick. Which means we will finish GWG 4 much sooner than I planned. We finished GWG 3 in late March last year. So, what to use this year??

That does sound like a lot of review. How many chapters does that book have? If your looking for something new try Rod and Staff. It's easy to skip over the lessons you already know. The lessons are short and to the point. All in all it's a very thorough program. I've also had good luck with Abeka Language and grammar.

Good luck on finding something new.

Well I adore the Analytical Grammar products. This year my 4th grader is doing Junior Analytical Grammar. It gets it done and gets them thinking about grammar without the overkill I found in Rod and Staff (I've never used GWG). My oldest is in the 3 session of Analytical Grammar. She knows her grammar very well which I couldnt' say after 2 years of R&S.

Holly, are you doing WT? I can't remember. And if you are, is it WT1 or WT2? If you're doing WT and complete an entire grade level of GWG, I'd just fill that time with art or something more interesting. There's just no need to beat a dead horse. There's SO LITTLE grammar you really need to cover for this age. I don't think the issue is needing more grammar but needing permission to move on. So if there's grammar in your writing as well, I move the wand and say feel free to finish and move on! :)

BTW, we did 5 minutes of SG 3-4 times a week alongside WT2 and it was plenty. I really don't think there's a heavy need for grammar at this age. If you want something to replace it with when you finish, get an editing or punctuation book.

Elizabeth,

No, I am not doing WT with her. I was doing CW Aesop, but we finished it and I am not ready to put a 4th grader who is only 8 in CW HOmer. So, I admit to floundering a bit on writing.

Rethinking the whole language arts thing I guess.

I can't help with the grammar thing--we use R&S4--and it, too, has lots of built in review. Since you are planning on doing Homer eventually, you may not want something that is a complete program.

But I think that for writing you're in the perfect situation for CW's poetry unit.

Holly, you should do WT2 with her. It would be a parallel slide, have both writing and grammar for you, and probably be a good fit. It's plenty accessible for an advanced 8 yo, I've even heard some people like WT2 BETTER than Homer. Haven't used Homer myself, so I don't know.

:iagree: We just completed Season 2 of AG. That's a total of 17 weeks. I am confident that my son can parse and diagram any sentence now. And, I couldn't say that after a year of Shurley Grammar (which I liked). The repetition in the next year of Shurley Grammar is what started me looking for another program. They may need to beat a dead horse in some schools, but not mine!
