I have a question about the mastery of concepts in Math U See. How is mastery determined in MUS. For instance in learning to recognize 0-9....my dd(5) often needs to count on the line from 0-9 until she gets to nine (she doesn't recognize 9 is 9 without counting). Is mastery only when the child can do it without counting or using the blocks....or are counting (counting only in primer) and the blocks allowed as long as the child can get the right answer?

In my workshop that we had, they said that Mastery wasn't required in Primer. I'm assuming that's where you are at. I'm not requiring my DD5 to master before we move on..just have a good grasp at what we are doing.

We're doing Alpha, but we moved past counting from 0-9 once dd could count that high. Lesson 3 in Alpha is memorizing the colors of the blocks so we're waiting until she recognizes the 9 block (and all the others) before moving on. I'm not sure if it's the same in Primer, but if so I would move on to the next concept.
I think I recall Steve saying that mastery is when the child can teach the lesson back to you.

I guess I should have added that I have a Alpha student also. I see in the Primer TM that mastery is not required...I just wasn't sure if I should move on till she could recognize the numbers 0-9 in their print form. We will work on this concept a bit more...she is doing it in her horizon k book as well.
My mastery question was geared more towards my Alpha student. Can they still use the blocks when they have mastered the concept? Or is mastery only when they can do the problem without using the blocks?

Primer is just to introduce the idea of math, no mastery. For the rest I base it on when they can teach the lesson back to me, and do the problems without the blocks and fingers.
