Is one of these more rigorous than the other? Is retention better in one than the other? I did hear the spelling is below level in CLE; is that true? We're doing Shurley 3 this yr, so I guess I'd be looking at level 4 for both of these, and we'd use something else for writing. I'd appreciate any input from those who have used both/either. I've looked at samples, so I'm familiar with both. Thanks!

I have not used CLE so I cannot compare. What I can say is that my ds9 loves grammar with GWG! He switched from R&S (which brought him to tears over having to recopy all the sentences and the abundance of "work") and couldn't be happier. GWG - workbook format, easy to use, clear, thorough, etc. But, it is just grammar. CLE seems more inclusing? Is that right? With GWG, you would need a separate spelling and writing program. We are happy w/ GWG and ds will move into GWG 5 next year. We have R&S5 already from dd11, but I'm willing to spend the $30 for a program that won't cause more tears in the am, KWIM? I hope somebody posts about CLE...I do remember reading many positive things about the program in general. HTH. Oh, retention...I think ds retains about as much as he would w/ any grammar program.

at the CLE yahoo group in the "photos" section. It includes grammar, spelling and penmanship.

Well as far as retention, I was worried about that too. So I gave my kids the CLE Lang. Arts 100-400 placement test today. They aced every section. We have used parts of R&S 2 and 3, LOTS of Schoolhouse Rock DVD time, and are almost done with GWG4.
