Both my girls (3rd and 5th grade) went off to school for the first time. I have been pleasantly surprised by how easy the transition has been. Both have teachers that seem enthusiastic about learning, but yet are able to "manage" the classroom well.

It does amaze me that they are gone for 7 hours a day and accomplish so little... They do math, language arts (spelling, some grammar and guided reading), a special (art, music, library, PE & tech) every day. Social studies, science and health are rotated during the week.

Then of course the homework - it hasn't been too bad, but they don't arrive home until 4pm, so even an hour of homework brings us to 5pm. I also feel they need to go to the park to get the ants out, so some days we don't end up eating until 7pm, not much time to do the extras. We are reading some ancient history daily and I still do our read aloud every night. I guess that will have to do for now.

I did get a good chuckle... They brought home a flyer about Back to School Night. In my day the whole family went and you would show off your desk and some of your work and then eat cookies and bad lemonade in the cafeteria. Our flyer included the following in bold: Please be sure to leave all children at home on Back to School Night. We find we can get more accomplished without the distraction of the students and siblings.

Very funny - I didn't know children were a distraction at school, I thought schools were all about the students!:001_huh:

Hope the rest of you braving PS for the first time are surviving!
