Typing and writing

We just started 3rd grade and will be using a writing curriculum for the first time. When do you let them start typing their papers? I was thinking of having them hand write the first draft and let them type the final draft. We are using Imitations in Writing - Aesop's Fables.

Those who teach typing, what software do you think would be appropriate for 3rd graders?

Typing Instructor Deluxe for Kids is what I have used. I usually start it at the end of 2nd or the beginning of 3rd grade.

This is my first year homeschooling. One of my goals was to equip my son with the tools to become a better writer. He has always hated writing but now I am realizing it is the physical act of writing and not composing that he disliked. While I still make him do handwriting as a subject and write neatly for other subjects, he does most of his composing on the computer. He now loves to write and is so excited to choose the paper on which we will print his composition.
