One test per book. Some of it was a bit more detailed than I thought was important, so I would look at them ahead of time and let my kids know if there was something specific they should study (for instance, I recall with the first 13 colonies, the kids were supposed to know which were the north, south, and mid colonies - I thought mine could use a little warning).

For the $7, I thought it was a great deal, the list of projects was great too.
