View Full Version : Mosquito Ringtones: can you hear them?

*anj*
08-28-2008, 11:23 PM
My friend called me and said that her 12yo has this new ringtone on her phone that can only be heard by kids. Her mom really cannot hear it. At first she thought it must be a big joke, so she started digging around and discovered that it's true. So anyway, follow this link (http://www.freemosquitoringtones.org/) and listen to the ringtones. At which level do you stop hearing anything?
Mine is pretty low, but then again my hearing isn't great.

15 on one ear, 17.4 on the other. 17.4 combined (I have headphones on this computer). On the next lower setting on each ear I could hear it if I concentrated but wouldn't notice it in day to day noise.

Ouch. I can hear all of them, and they are painful.

dd14 is always trying out new ones, trying to find one I can't hear.

Anj, where do you get all this cool stuff?!!?

Tommorrow we are starting school with a "hearing test"! I can't hear anything under "49 and under" either Mindy. Just when I was getting use to my knees creaking....now it's my ears giving out. :glare:

Way cool link Anj!

Sure 'nough, I can hear the 30-and-younger one, but I can only hear one or two of the 24-and-under ones, and only if I know they're there, you know? The ones for the above-30 crowd are painful to me.

I can hear everything down to the top 24 and younger, but just barely. My 14yo can't hear anything below 39, which I find weird. My 6yo only hears the ones I hear. We can hear the sound cutting in and out below that, but not the sound itself.

I can hear up to the lowest 24 and under. That's really interesting.

DH and I can hear the middle 24-and-up. DS12 can hear all of them, and they're painful to him.

I'm kind of glad I lost my highest-frequency hearing because the sound of a TV being turned on used to drive me batty and now I barely hear it.

Really? I can hear the 49 and under and I can feel the 39 and under. Maybe it's because I turned the speaker up really high?

Oh, and Laney the gray eyebrow hair is nothing. Just you wait. You'll be shocked. :glare:

I doubt that. Unless the text message is being directly transmitted to your brain... Teachers are all hearing and all seeing :bigear:.

My dd tried this last year in her co-op class. When the teacher caught her with the phone, and dd told her she wasn't supposed to be able to hear it, the teacher told her, "I'm only 25!!!" :)

Poor dd. Thankfully, she's found other adults to pull this on. It just thrills her to no end.

What I want to know is this: why is it that as soon as we need to do a lot of facial-hair plucking, our eyesight starts to go?

That does not help matters.

I can't hear the 17khz "24 and younger" one, but all of the others come through just fine.

It's weird, too, because I keep thinking my hearing is going. I have noticed, though, that it tends to be the lower frequencies that I'm losing.

OH yeah, I can hear them all the way down to the 24 and under! ACK! It drives me batty. Our local mall has that sound at the entrance to some of the higher-end stores - now I know why - to discourage teens from coming in.

The 18 and under are horrible noises... reminds me of when I was a kid and there was a bird deterrent in the indoor tennis courts- AAAK that was an awful noise it made... but people weren't supposed to be able to hear it!

Then there was my grandma's bat machine which was supposed to keep the bats away. It kept me up at night with that high pitched whine.

There were a few sounds on there that I couldn't hear but I think it is my computer because I could hear the clicking and I don't have good speakers, just the ones on the monitor.

Edited to add: I went back and yes, my speakers weren't making the sounds- I hear them all. I am 29.

I can't hear at 15....The first several times I didn't think I could hear 14 either but then I could tell a slight difference. I may just not have had the volume up high enough originally though and there is a good bit of white noise in here (computer, fan, etc).

Very odd.

I can hear 20 khz and 21 khz but not 16-19 khz or 22 khz

I don't think anyone could hear them with background noise in the room.

Well, *&#@. My hearing is age 50 and over. Of course I have cheap headphones on because everyone else is sleeping. Heck, I can hear my dh snoring from the other room. I can hear a real mosquito buzzing around my bedroom. Man at least I can hear something.

I'm trying this on ds when he gets up. The Homeschool hearing test.

Thanks anj. :glare: Now I'm going to pluck my grey eyebrows, if I can see them, and crank my 80's music, which was probably the last decade my hearing was normal. :001_huh::lol::001_huh::lol:

Hmmm...I wonder if there is a connection between the 80's music and lack of hearing?

Hey, now ...

I was really worried last night, when I couldn't hear anything below 49. This morning I realized that I had had the volume on the computer set really low

With the volume all the way up I can hear all of them, although anything below 30 is very quiet.

My 8 year old and I can only hear the 49 and younger and then above in age. My ears have been blocked lately, and I haven't gone to the doctor about it.

Now, if I move the computer speakers close to me, I can hear them all, so it's not just about frequency but volume as well. I'm assuming we all have different sorts of speakers, here.

I cranked up the volume and can hear down to the 30. Funny I can hear the last one (the 22khz) as well, but nothing in between.

DS can hear them all. :glare:

I'll have my dh take this and then we'll see if we can blame 70's music too.

I can hear them all - no problem - all clear as a bell.

The thing that bothered me about this website though was the statement at the end:

You should use the last tone on this list that you can hear. For instance, if you can hear the 17khz and the 18khz tone, use the 18khz - less people will be able to hear it.

I really can't help it folks - it truly is a blessing and a curse - but it ought to say "fewer" people, not "less." Aaaaaaacccccckkkkkk! Why do I care????:D

I am 48 (for another 3 months!) and I could hear all of them (OUCH) down through the lowest 24 & under. After that I couldn't hear them.

Why would anyone even want a ringtone that hurts your ears like that? Weird.

I am almost 27 and can just barely hear the 19 khz one (24 and under). I think I would have to have the 39 and younger one to actually hear it loudly enough to realize it is my phone, however!

Have you heard about these frequencies being used to discourage teens from loitering in certain areas?

I have a sensation in my ears for the 24 & under ones, but I wouldn't use the word "hearing" to describe it.
