Good morning ladies!
If had gotten up yesterday as early as I did this morning, I would have run yesterday. We had a field trip planned that required a 8:30 check-in. So I didn't get up early enough to run before and then when we got home, I could not keep my eyes open and had to take a nap. So no run.
Today I got up early and was out running around 7 am. No where to go until this afternoon! Anyway, it was a 3 1/4 mile run. 34 min. 10:3? pace. 377 calories. And slight rain. Nothing really to speak of unless you ask my dog who had to shake while we ran. We're expecting rain until Friday so we'll see how heavy it gets and if I'll run or not.
I'm trying to decide if I should sign up for a race. There will be a marathon and 1/2 marathon in town in Nov. It's only 10 weeks away so not really enough time to train for the full, so I'm thinking about the 1/2. Train or lose weight. Train or lose weight. (You aren't supposed to try and lose while training for longer races.) Train or lose weight....

Good job, Cheryl! Per the train or lose weight debate: Don't you think that in the course of training you'll probably lose some weight anyway? I dunno--I think I might go with training. The sense of accomplishment that you'd feel completing a 1/2 marathon has GOT to be greater than knocking off a few pounds.... But maybe that's just me. I'm no runner--I can't imagine running that far!
No power walk for me this AM--my sister (the marathoner) and her family went into DC, so I slept in. Bad Leila! Bad Leila! ;)

Great job Cheryl! I agree - I'd think that through the training you'd lose weight - or at least tighten up. I'm loving having a goal to work toward, although sometimes I get overwhelmed at the work I have left to do.
I went 3.5 today. I didn't go yesterday - dd had been up all night long and I needed to sleep. Felt like a slug all day. Dd was up all night again last night, but I just couldn't take off two days in a row!!! Glad I ran! I kept thinking of Angie's quote - I'd rather hurt from exercising than hurt from not exercising! It got me out of bed and out the door!!!
Leila - We'll expect a workout report from you tomorrow!!:bigear:

I wanted to stay in bed so badly. But I endured and did Pilates. I had cut Pilates back to non-running days, but I can tell it is affecting my running. I do a different Pilates routine on running days; it doesn't take as long.
Cheryl, I would train. I would continue to try and eat healthy (cut out all junk food, low fat, whole grains, lots of fruits and veggies), but I would not restrict your calories. You will most likely still lose some weight, and the long term affect of pushing yourself to a half marathon will be worth it. (meaning increase in your cardio fitness). Just my 2 cents.

I highly recommend Pilates. Strengthening your core, stretching, and correcting your posture all help in running (and other exercises). I started out with a Gaiam's DVD (one for beginners). I also bought a book. I think it was put out by DK. I just do that rountine, no DVD. It's faster. On my non-running days I do another Gaiam DVD that came with a toning ring. It focuses on toning, doing a little more arm work than my basic routine.
One on the things I like about Pilates is that when I'm done I feel so energized. Running feels good, but after Pilates I feel even better.

Weight loss will come with regular exercise. I'm trying to resist weighing myself and worrying about weight and instead focus on how great I feel when I exercise and the fact that every day I'm toning, thus there will be a little less of me. :)
I also find that once I'm several months into exercising and drinking more water, my tastes change for the better so I automatically eat healthier. Baby steps. I would caution you about getting too caught up with calories. Just make it a goal to be active regularly, the rest will follow.
Keep up the great work!

My schedule has been so wacked since dh left on Sunday. I had high hopes and big plans of getting MORE done without having to worry about his schedule but apparently worrying about his schedule keeps me on schedule.
I've let ds8 stay up too late and sleep in too long.
I've eaten very poorly.
I missed Bible Study last night and now feel compelled to go tonight just as dh will be walking in the door.
AND I've not taken one step in exercise since he's been gone.
Sigh.
And WHAT is up with my visitor. One little showing and then poof! she's gone. Now I have to sit around and fret that maybe it wasn't a real visit but implantation (sorry, couldn't think of an analogy for that one) and should I buy an HPT or should I just put it out of my head. And remember that horrible way I reported feeling Monday morning? Guess what I had dreamed that put me in that sad funk all day. Yep...that I was pregnant. It just seemed so real so when I woke up and realized it was a dream a deep sadness was all over me.

The calories burned come with the ipod. :001_smile: Otherwise I would have no idea!
When I trained for the marathon i ran a couple years ago, I lose no weight, because I wasn't supposed to. I changed my eating so that I wouldn't. I worry more about doing harm by doing too much than my weight, really. I mean running 20 miles takes a whole slew of calories!

I've not been losing weight while training either. I wonder if I'm eating more because I've been working out so hard. I really only have about another 10 pounds to go, but it has been frustrating. So, I do understand the dilemma!

Awww. :grouphug: I sure hope it IS implantation. If it were me, I'd be out the door buying a test. I just have to know those kinds of things!
What is it with visitors lately?? Mine has been wacky too. I get this mid-cycle spotting for a day (I have an appointment next week for my annual). Then, my stupid cycle has been SOOOOO painful. It's just frustrating!

What is up with little girl? Is she one of those who just doesn't need much sleep or is her schedule messed up? When ds was almost one he went through a spell of waking up every 2 hours....I finally did a 3 night version of 'cry it out'. It worked like magic.

How much times does it take you to do a Pilates routine?

I'm not sure. She's just decided she doesn't wear diapers anymore - day or night. I wonder if she's waking up dreaming about it or something. I've read that when they go through those big developmental changes they are more wakeful at night. Luckily, she is one who sleeps VERY well. Usually when she wakes up at night, I can just tell her that it's not morning and she needs to go to sleep and she does. She's always been such a good sleeper that when she doesn't, it really throws me for a loop!!

You may not lose pounds, but you will probably lose inches. I would record your measurement now and then again when you run the race. Remember muscle is more dense than fat.
Today I did a 5.3 mile walk, and then cleaned our shower(which is a huge job trust me). We have the world's worst water. No lie the hot water comes out an orange color. It's like this for everyone in our neighborhood. Needless to say I have to really strub the shower often as it builds up so fast.

Great job on the walk. I hate cleaning the shower. I would die if I had to do it more often than I do now. I had a friend in college who loved being at school for this very reason. At home the water was orange. She said it was iron of something. I do believe it is a HUGE job!

You're KILLIN' me!
Y'know, my theory on this--and I'm an idiot, so keep that in mind--is that you have to "diet" (I don't mean a program here, I mean a lifestyle) to lose weight and exercise to maintain. For example, it takes about a 3500 calorie deficit to lose a pound. A POUND!! That could EASILY be accomplished by skipping the bedtime bowl of ice cream each night--but think how long you have to be on the treadmill to rack up that kind of calorie count!
I know that was rough math, but I hope you get what I mean there. Do you? Cuz I haven't had any coffee yet today. Brain's still fuzzified.... :tongue_smilie:

Go get the HPT and report back! And in the meantime, :grouphug: .
How is your heel?
Thanks for asking, Scarlett! I THINK it's a little better, but I want to keep icing it and watching out for it. I don't want to end up wearing a ski boot contraption to bed like my sister does with her chronic plantar fasciitis. This is the one thing that keeps me from really getting into running: My sister has had blackened and missing toenails, IT band problems, the foot thing, a problem with her piriformis muscle, a knee problem.... On the one hand, she's incredibly healthy--she could be on the cover of a magazine, and she's much less likely than I am to end up as a wandering grizzly bear's next meal (too fast, too lean). On the other hand, the average body just doesn't seem to be made to do any ONE thing for a really long time or over a really long distance....
Please don't shoot fiery e-darts at me! :leaving:
But I'd love to hear others' thoughts on that....

I got this email from a friend of mine and I thought my fellow runners would appreciate it...
>>Dd has to be in her seat at school by 7:30, so I feel your pain when it comes to getting up early to run. I have to get up at 5:30 now if I want to get it in. I made it 2 mornings last week and then of course, over the weekend it is not so hard to schedule. I run roughly 15 miles per week-sometimes a couple more, sometimes a couple less. Three is my minimum, six is my max. But every couple weeks I do a fast walk and once a week I do sprints. So I try to spice it up a little. I finally got an ipod and it helps distract me from the "WHAT AM I DOING THIS FOR?" thoughts around mile two. Once I get to three or four, it's a breeze. I really enjoy it, though. It makes me feel extremely refreshed and clear (well, relatively) in my head! Anyway, I am so glad you are doing it too. Don't worry-your distance will come. I started out only running half a mile at a time and I remember being really proud when I could do a mile! It gets easier.>>>

I have a UTI, which is of course a pain, both literally and figuratively in that I hate taking time to go to the doctor. But because I'm flying out on Monday, I want to make sure I deal with this. I may or may not get in a run later. I already skipped both Saturday and Sunday, so I hate to miss again. Especially because I won't be running as much when we're away.
Good job to the rest of you! Keep it up!

Great job all! Yes! I didn't fall off the planet! With our homeschool schedule in full swing, I'm finding it hard to check in!
Cheryl, I feel your pain with the train or lose weight issue. I trained for 12 weeks for my tri and didn't lose a thing either. I have to seriously portion my food for me to lose weight, which I found very hard while training. Let us know what you decide!
I ran 4 miles today and 3 miles yesterday. DH and I also went out for a 30 minute bike ride last night. So, I'm running, just can't check in all the time!
Okay! Off to the library . . . :auto:

Yep. She said no running and so did the podiatrist (my appt. with him is on 9/11). She did encourage me to do other forms of exercise, and she even let me take the office's copy of Runner's World :D She suggested that I -- and every runner -- get a subscription.
