Anyone doing formal Bible study or music/art appreciation as part of their regular AS? Anyone have experience with the Harmony Fine Arts program, or the Growing Reader Phonics Bible? I am putting together my AS plan for ds6 and thinking to do these on week-ends, since weeknights will be filled with LA. Any advice would be appreciated.

For art appreciation at this age, I really like the Come Look With Me books. I afterschool and we've had great success with this series. At that age, my dc would crowd around and beg for me to do "just one more." This is exactly as you want afterschooling to be, right?;)

I do afterschool all of those things (bible, music, and art) with a 7th, 4th, 3rd, and K dc , but am feeling fuzzy in the brain right now and would probably write a reply I'd be embarrassed of later:001_huh:. I shoot for daily bible and once a week art/music. Music appreciaton is easily done in the car with cd on the way to school. Feel free to PM me if you want any specifics.

We try to AS those subjects as well as others. I haven't used the programs you mention. For Bible, we try to do read out of our Bible storybook each day and have prayer time. Beyond that I watch for life moments where we can talk about what God would want us to do. We're hoping to start the Child's Book of Character Building tomorrow.

For music, my children have always listened to lots of classical music on the radio. My youngest loves to listen to the CD Classical Cats. This year I'm hoping to make it more formal by using Stories of Great Composers. It has a story and activity page about a variety of composers and then I'll intentionally play that composers music during the month. For art appreciation, I like the Come Look With Me books Shay mentioned. We're also going to be using Artistic Pursuits this year. We'll see how it goes. I've been really fortunate that our YMCA offers great art camps in the summer and art days on some of the days the kids have off school. Often then focus on a particular artist or art period.

We are doing music appreciation afterschooling with Themes to Remember and supplementing with books/cds from the library for each composer. I am trying to loosely follow the 6 year schedule from the Themes to Remember website, and so far, my kids love it! (kinder and first grade) They are learning the vocabulary (a lot of which they knew from "Little Einsteins, anyway) and they love the songs and lyrics. They will both start piano next year, as well.

They are both in ballet, so I kind of consider that to be part music/part art appreciation.

For other art, we read various children's books about artists, such as Degas and the Little Dancer, Katie and the Mona Lisa, etc. I thinking about using Usborne Art Treasury next summer, or their Introduction to Art. They also enjoy drawing books.

We are Buddhist, so we also read children's stories like I Once Was a Monkey, etc.

We try to incorporate a lot these extra topics into reading material, so it doesn't seem overwhelming.

HTH.
