You may already know about this, but if you have a child who loves to build and create things, I would recommend that you look into getting a subscription to Make Magazine (http://www.makezine.com/). We just received our first issue, and my oldest son is so excited. He's the same one who took the wooden shelves from our closet remodel to make a parapet in the backyard. Just FYI--the magazine is great, but a little expensive. My DH, a mechanical engineer, really likes the magazine too; the current issue shows you how to build quality sound speakers out of paper plates. I think this will be a great resource for our homeschool science fair.

Can I piggyback on your post with another recommendation?

Well, I will ;)

The Ultimate Building Book by Steven Caney. It's a reference and a hands-on book. It includes projects that even the elementary set can do on their own.
