Just came back from seeing it this afternoon. Wow, definitely not an uplifting sort of film. But I liked it. Complicated relationships, really nice scenery, good acting.

I've heard conflicting reports about the movie, but I love miniseries so much I cannot bring myself to see it to judge for myself.

I hadn't seen or heard of the miniseries at all. Nor the book. Well, I had heard the title, but knew nothing of the story line. So going in totally cold like that might have been a different experience. I liked the movie. Was it my favorite ever? No. But the actors were good. And the story intense, complicated, interesting. Overall, I liked it and am glad that I went.

Thanks for the information about the series. I will see if I can find that!

:iagree:

And the book too... but it's not light stuff.

Thanks for the report. I am hoping to see it soon. What movie (tone-wise) would you compare to it?

Wow, I completely stink at analyzing and comparing like that.:D

So, one critic compared it to Atonement but said Brideshead was the better of the 2. I have not seen Atonement and cannot say.

One that came to mind from long ago was The English Patient. I thought the passion and complications of relationships in that film were of similar tone perhaps? But truly, I stink at that!

WOW!! I really enjoyed Atonement. I don't know if enjoyed is the right word as it is terribly, TERRIBLY sad, but a very well crafted story. Now I MUST see it! :auto:

Brideshead Revisited is my most favorite novel. The miniseries captures the book perfectly. It is so good, I am not tempted to see the new movie. If you can find the book on cd read by Jeremy Irons - you will be on cloud nine. I find it interesting from a catholic point of view as well. Some catholic friends have been appalled by it. But I think it shows real people struggling with faith, each other and themselves. Faulkner said the only story is the human heart in conflict with itself. That is definitely in Brideshead. I do not know about the movie, but there is a subtle, but definite christian redemption throughout the book, and I do not mean the old man's. The dialogue between Charles Ryder and his father is top notch! I watched it again (the mini series) a few weeks ago. I might need to watch it again. "The low door in the garden wall..."

Loved the book. Loved the miniseries. Will not be going to see the movie.

This is one of the (many) bloggers (http://churchofthemasses.blogspot.com/2008/08/brideshead-eviscerated.html) who convinced me to save my money.

We were discussing this at dinner and my son said, "It's like remaking The Sound of Music but taking out all the music because a musical just slows down the plot." Not bad for 13.

Even the miniseries version missed some key points but it wasn't stripping the soul out of the story.

Oh my! See, I knew nothing about the original. This was simply a new story for me. I still think it was a good movie. However, having looked around a bit, it would likely not satisfy those who love the original if they are to make comparisons.

Books to movies do that so much. The movies are mostly a disappointment to me if I have loved the books. I guess this might fall into that category as well. I shall have to read the book now.

Wow, pretty good indeed! Very clever of him.

I did see that one critic said that it would have been good if there had been a different title to the film.

I rarely go to movies of books I have loved. I haven't seen the Narnia movies, and I only saw Atonement because it was playing on a flight I was on. I guess I get a mental picture of the characters and setting and don't want it "ruined" by the filmaker's concept. Plus so much has to be dropped from the storyline that the films sometimes don't make sense. For example, Graham Greene's novels rarely translate well to film.

However, I will go back read a book if I loved the movie/show. That's how it was after I saw the Brideshead Revisitied mini-series, and after seeing The Jewel in the Crown I went and read Paul Scott's Raj Quartet.

in World Magazine and they slaughtered it. Said they did nothing to uphold the redemption themes in the book. I loved the book in college. I am torn whether to see the movie.
