Every time I see that phrase I am imagining all these levitating kids. I've never seen a "falling" xgrader or whatever the opposite is, so, can someone translate for me?
I don't think all these posters have levitating kids - and if so, mine want in on it!
I think it means that they are going into "x" grade in the fall.

Yep, it's a way to describe grade level over the summer. Otherwise you don't knw if someone is talking about the grade they WERE in or the grade they WILL be in.

I'd never heard this expression until we moved to the US (Atlanta). It's simply not used in Canada, at least in my experience. It was always "I'm going into grade xx."

I've only ever heard it on these boards--it sure is a handy way to say your child will be going into Grade x.
I've never liked the phrase "go into"--you go into a room, how do you go into a grade level?

I never heard this expression til I moved to the East Coast, specifically in the Waldorf school (but not the Waldorf School in Michigan.)
Growing up, once school ended for the year, you were officially part of the next grade (including the summer.)

Same here. Even after reading the first couple of posts in this thread, I encountered "rising 6th grader" in another thread and wondered...is he/she going into 6th grade, or rising out of it? I figure, by now (August), you should be able to call it what it is.

wow. thanks everyone. (though I must admit to being disappointed there aren't any levitating kids out there)

Good question. I wasn't familiar with the term either.
