I have been "sugar free" for over two years, now...and I guess I expected my blood sugar level to be lower at my yearly physical this year. It was 97. Now, my doc says that is fine...but, I thought it would be closer to 90...like it was few years ago.
Also, my potassium was a bit high. Unfortunately, I did a Google search on that subject and what I came up with is I'm deathly ill! Smiles! Not really, but elevated potassium levels can be an indicator of some serious issues. My doc didn't seem too concerned because it was just a slight elevation. I think he believes I had a false-positive reading or it spiked from something that I've been eating recently. However, this WAS a fasting blood draw.
Sigh...
He's going to do another blood draw in a few months.
Thanks for reading...my mind is playing with me, and I'm thinking the worst, of course!

Is usually in the low 100's. I worked in a lab so we could draw each other and run our own labs when we had do do correlations and such. Potassium is usually monitored in conjunction with other test, on it's own no worries, like you said diet can have some effect. If you had other results out of kelter then maybe a issue. But I always like to know my lab results, I'm geeky that way. Give me a microscope and I'm a happy girl! :p

97 is fine. 97 is perfect. Why would you want a lower blood sugar in the middle of the day?
Potassium levels will ebb and flow. No worries until your doc says "Worry!" :)

What I was told (my dh is diabetic) is that a fasting blood sugar of 120 and over would give a preliminary diagnosis of diabetes.
Are you worried about diabetes? Then try to scale down your starchy carbs - potatoes, white bread etc. Try to eat more protein (which is converted to sugar over a much longer time period than carbs).
I'm not a doc but if your potassium is high could it be because you are eating a lot of foods with potassium? Google it but bananas and soft drinks come to mind as high in potassium.
I'm glad you're being monitored but I would try to make some small life-style changes and not worry too much.

Hi Holly,
I keep track of my blood sugar levels annually. Both of my parents developed Type II diabetes later in life, and I had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy. Therefore, I'm predisposed to developing diabetes.
My blood sugar levels generally range from 99 to 105. I exercise 4-5 times a week. I don't eat past 7pm unless we're going out to dinner. I had to make this rule because I generally do all of my sweet, junk food eating at night. It's actually helped me lose weight this past fall.
When I worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs, diabetes was usually diagnosed when the blood sugar levels were consistently elevated over 140. It's been many years since I've worked, and some doctors may have different diagnostic procedures, but I feel if I can keep my blood sugar at 99, I'm doing well.

I don't necessarily want a lower blood sugar level in the middle of the day. I was just wondering why...after fasting...is wasn't lower. I guess I just thought it would come down more since I don't eat sugar any more.
A few years ago it was 107, so my doc told me to cut out sugar. He did another test 3 months later and it had dropped to 99. I've also lost a total of 17 pounds JUST by changing my sugar intake.
Amazing!

I'm not worried about diabetes. It's just my sugar used to hover around 90. I guess growing older is a fact of life!
I don't eat white bread...well...very rarely. I make my own whole wheat bread. I don't drink soft drinks. I usually scrape out the potato to give to my children and I just eat the skins with the small amount of potato left. However, I've been snacking on pine nuts lately. I guess that could have done it. ???

My dh is also diabetic, and they have him count carbs to manage his levels. That means that while Whole Wheat bread is better, takes longer to digest and doesn't spike his levels, it still has a ton of carbs and he can't have it very often.
Nuts are about mid range in carbs, and is one of his few snacks. Rice can be another problem food, as well as tomatoes (and all tomato based sauces), squash and all fruit. Bananas are particularity high in carbs.
Not that I think you need to worry, but if you are looking for what food/foods might be...the culprit, I thought I would throw those out.

Thanks! I really have no idea what caused this...and, my doc did not seem too concerned. I don't eat any of those foods in excess.
I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and wait for the next blood test.
Thanks for your response!
