Please tell me this is a good choice for my daughter!! We have tried soooo many programs andi am getting her tested for a learning disabililty but while i wait, i am going ahead and doing level b of right start. she is 9, struggles with math facts and a host of other things- I have even thought about using this with her 6 year old brothers as well. just looking for confirmation.
thanks

Yes, Pam... RightStart is a VERY good choice for your daughter. I wholeheartedly recommend it 100% for children who struggle with math. We've been using it for 2 1/2 years and I couldn't be more happy with the results. One of my daughters had a hard time with math before RS, but no longer struggles.

Good luck!

Pam,

I started my oldest in Right Start level B when she was 9. She was doing Singapore only before that (did a little Miquon, but really disliked it) and while she was doing fine in math she didn't feel she was good at it and disliked it as a subject.

She has been working with Right Start...well it will be 2 years in January. She should be done with level C by then (we are doing 2 lessons a day right now, though we can't always keep up that pace). Then we will continue into Level D till she finishes them all or decides she really doesn't need to continue on.

It used to be that when she came accost a new concept in Singapore I would have to sit with her for a couple of weeks and walk her through how to do things on a white board. It has been a long time since she has needed that sort of hand holding. Somehow in working with these basic concepts she has transfered it to her Singapore (she is just starting Singapore 4B). Just the other day she was telling me how good she is at math now. :D That was worth all the $$ and time spent on RS alone. Math isn't her favorite subject by far, but it isn't her least favorite anymore either.

We've been using it with our dyslexic and adhd dd for almost a year. I don't really like it- and she doesn't either. I'm just not sure about it. I keep really wanted it to work, but it hasn't. It seems to confuse her more than MUS did. I'm currently switching back to MUS. It's just more simple than RS.

I hope it works for your dd. I read all these success stories and feel frustrated by it all. There is a yahoo group. You might join to get more help with it.

ETA- My dd is 9 and my 6 yo does math with us, too. She likes RS, but I'm switching her as well.

Levels C through E. While there were a few lessons that proved to confuse a concept my ds had mastered rather than reinforce it, there was more that I liked than didn't, so continued with it.

There was a lot of geometry in Levels D & E and I felt that he needed more practice with the basic functions so we have switched to Teaching Textbooks (doesn't begin until Grade 5).

No program is totally perfect... you have to let it work for you, not against you, like I did when we did the lesson that proved to confuse my ds. I learned to look ahead, skip parts of or entire lessons that I thought might confuse.

There were many lessons when I wasn't clear on the purpose of the approach Dr. Cotter was taking, but eventually when I 'got it' it made alot of sense, and that's the reason I continued on with RS. The games are great for learning concepts and math facts in a fun way, rather than typical flash card testing.

Don't stress...you may like it, you may not. But, you've only made a commitment for one year, or you could just play games all year and sell the curriculum!

HTH,
Iris
