I bought the book, You Staying Young: The Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty, by Drs. Roizen & Oz.

The first thing I did after reading the book was to make a list of all the vitamins and supplements they recommend, and buy them.

Within a couple of days of taking all these pills, my energy level skyrocketed and my mental alertness increased noticeably.

The book was great and I highly recommend it. I learned a lot from it.

The docs have a website: www.realage.com , where you can take a test to determine your "real age" as opposed to your physical age.

So I am offering this suggestion for those who don't know about this book and this website. You needn't be an old lady like me to benefit from it, IMO. If I'd known about this stuff years ago, I perhaps would be healthier now.

Are you by any chance taking a supplement called Acetyl L-Carnitine? I just bought a supplement containing this. It's supposed to promote cellular health/good brain function, but for me it gave me the worst insomnia I've ever had! Usually I have no problem falling asleep at night, but I'm a light sleeper and sometimes have trouble getting back to sleep if something wakes me up during the night. I only took one instead of the recommended two pills with breakfast and by bedtime I was still feeling wide awake and jittery and was up most of the night. I checked on the internet to see if this was a side effect, and it is. So...I cancelled my auto-delivery order 'cause I need my beauty sleep!

I'm glad you liked the book. I've seen both Drs. on tv but haven't read any of their books. I think I'll start with this one. Thanks!

I can still drink coffee, right?

I have sworn off books that tell me to forgo my cup of joe.

Yes. Black coffee can be good for you and is a recommended beverage, up to 5 cups a day I think it was. That surprised me. All my adult life I've been nagged by well-meaning people about how BAD coffee is, and here the docs recommend it!

Of course, if I drink plenty of water, 5 cups of black coffee, 3 cups of green tea, and 2 cups of oolong tea, I will float away.

No sugar though -- that negates the good effects. I can't recall about the cream, no memory hook for that one since I don't use it.

First, I figured out what I needed. Then I found out there are lots of vitamin brands on the market and couldn't figure out which to use. I joined consumer labs, which is an organization that tests vitamins and supplements to see if they contain what they say they contain. www.consumerlabs.com Some of the info was available at no charge, but too much I wanted to know was not.

This is what I ended up buying. There were a few things I took off the list -- it got expensive. VM is Vitamin World.

Aspirin (1/day)
VM Tumeric 400 mg nonirradiated herbal supplement (3/day)
VM Q-Sorb Coenzyme Q-10, 100 mg, (2/day)
VM Vitamin B-12, 500 mcg (2/day)
VM Neuro-PS Phosphatidylserine, 100 mg (2/day)
VM Time Release Pantothenic Acid, 500 mg (1/day)
VM Korean Ginseng, 500 mg (2/day)
VM Selenium, 200 mcg (1/day)
VM High Potency Magnesium, 500 mg (1/day)
VM Biotin, 300 mcg (1/day)
VM B-50 B-Complex Vitamin (1/day)
Vm Calcium 600 + Vitamin D (2/day)
Centrum Silver (1/day)

I made a chart on which I listed the recommended supplements and dosages. I subtracted what was already in Centrum Silver, and figured out what I needed from there.

I thought this was way too many supplements, considering I do eat food, but when I took the real age test I was not 51, not 41, not 21 (I wish!) .... I was 68!!! Serious measures must be taken, I figured.

Laurie, I did not get Acetyl L-Carnitine because I ran out of money. There were several supplements I did not get because I didn't think the cost justified it. Even with all that, I don't think I'll buy the tumeric or the ginseng again. Both seem optional to me and they just add to the number of pills I already take.

Holy Cow! That's a lot of pills. Do they recommend whole foods from which one can get the same benefits?

I think I'll have to check out the book.

Yes, they do have lists of foods on the website and in the book from which these vitamins and supplements can be obtained. Usually, though, a high enough amount could not be gotten from food alone.

I dread taking those pills every day because I hate taking medication, even vitamins. I did discover that taking the pills with orange juice is easier for me -- I take 5 or so at a time (2 for the real big ones) and they float down my throat faster with a thicker liquid, I guess.

That is great! Wow!

As far as I'm concerned, anything is better than 68.

my naturopath asked me if I'm drinking coffee, I answered: "Yes, and I am not changing THAT, other things maybe." She just smiled and let it go.

LOL, you're too funny, Kelli!

I asked dh the other day if he thought it would be wrong to ask for a LARGE completely caffeinated coffee as well as beer the minute I deliver this baby. He thought that would be fine, God love him. :D
