I'll be the first then. Not only do I believe it's historical and patriotic but I also believe that the USA was founded on Christian principles and beliefs and that we don't have to change just because others don't agree. I wouldn't move to China and expect them to take down all the Buddist and other sayings and idols. There. I think this is my first "controversial" post ever!! :D
Be gentle. I do not expect everyone to agree with me. :)

There's an old joke in Macroeconomics classes,
It's a good thing you trust in God, because there's nothing else backing up paper currency.
(Since the US went off the Bretton Woods gold equivalency back in the 70s, the only reason to accept paper currency is the trust that other people will accept it in exchange for goods and services too).
Okay, I'll stop the econ geek stuff now....

From http://www.ustreas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.html
The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins.

It's interesting that "separation of church and state" is not in the Constitution; it's only a phrase in a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists. If you read the letter, the phrase is taken out of context even there.
Whenever someone says "what about s of ch and st?" to me I always answer "You mean the establishment clause?", because that is in the Constitution and only forbids Congress passing a law establishing a specific state religion, i.e., a Catholic state or an Methodist state, etc. It was never intended to separate government from God Himself or religion in general. Government just can't favor one "established" religion over another.
So, I guess what I am saying in all that was that having "In God We Trust" doesn't constitue government passing a law establishing a specific church as it's head.
I was studying this issue recently with ds14 and discovered this wasn't even an issue until the 1930's when liberalism began to rise and they needed a way to get rid of Christianity and religion in general from having any influence in public policy.

I had a law professor once who said that the Constitution means whatever the Supreme Court decides it means.
